Is poor genetic expression the reason for poor results?

For those of you who have been doing this for a while, what do you expect for getting plants that match what the breeder is advertising? It is discouraging to take a plant to flower, only to have it be subpar and not do what you are expecting it to do. Even with some of the bigger "named" breeders, I am experiencing low rates. When the plants don't express correctly, they are all subpar in terms of flavor and scent. I have never had a plant that didn't express its advertised genetics, be exceptionally good. They all have little to no scent or flavor, and I am starting to believe that it's just not good genetics and maybe some issues with getting it to be an autoflower.

I first believed it was me, and my process. I was doing 1 plant at a time for a while, and it was very rare I'd get amazing results. I took controlling this to the extreme, to the point I have a PH controller on my nutes, and have in tent and out of tent wifi monitors, co2 monitor, as well as heaters, air conditioning, humidifiers and dehumidifiers all attempting to provide the perfect conditions. Through this process my plants have become super healthy, huge and yield is outstanding, but quality continues to suffer.

Now, I am growing multiple plants side by side, doing batches of the same genetics, and I am beginning to see it is not me, but the plants themselves. For example, my last batch of Purple Lemonade yielded 1 amazing, dark purple color, stinky plant covered in resin that with the first hit, my buddy said "this tastes like lemonade" before he ever knew the strain. The other 3, little scent, little taste, no good colors, just below average flower that nobody really wants to enjoy.

I did experience 1 out of 6 or 7 different breeders that gave me what I consider 100% results. The 4 plants did have different visual phenotype, but they all very closely matched what was advertised. I am about to try another package from the same breeder, so we will see how that turns out. I'd guess my normal results, are 1 out of 4 plants, out of all the other breeders I have tried. Some much lower than that.

So, giving it your best guess, how many of your plants express correctly? Do you notice that if your plants do not express correctly, they are poor quality? If you have good results, please drop the breeder name. If you have poor results, let's just not bash anyone. Or, if you think I'm just nuts, let me know that too!

I'm not sure I understand your question. A given plant expresses what it expresses. Genotypic expression is complicated to say the least. If yields are not meeting your expectations across breeders, perhaps it another issue?

I may have said it incorrectly. I have very limited knowledge on the topic.

For instance, you order a pack of 4 seeds that are blueberry auto. Breeder claims it has purple colors, smells sweet and tastes like blueberries. Out of those 4 plants, 1 of them exhibit those characteristics with good smell, taste, and colors. 3 of them are just green, little to no scent, and little to no taste at all. That is what I am experiencing. Since they are getting the exact same conditions at the exact same time, I can't understand why some of my plants are so good, and some never develop any scent and taste like low grade cannabis.

Yield is not my issue, in fact, I'd argue my yield is fantastic compared to most.

OK - thanks and make sense.

I primarily grow Mephisto (plus some Gnome and Night Owl) and haven't seen much variance, but Mephisto is pretty good about identifying potential phenotypes (using that term loosely) in a given cultivar.

I actually got my hands on some Mephisto seeds, 3 strains, so my next few grows will be with them. If this run of Sweet Seeds goes as good as last, and the Mephistos go well after, I'm convinced that I just got into some bad breeders and that was the root cause of my poor results.

Stick around and let us know. Very knowledgeable and welcoming community here.

I’m new to growing so take my opine with a few grains of salt, but I wouldn’t say you’ve gotten “bad” breeders (they do exist i’m sure lol) so much as some breeders have more extensive breeding programs than others (to @CannabisMingus point) to lock in specific phenotypes (including terpene profiles), or at least attempt to stabilize a cultivar to express low phenotypic variation at a certain filial generation. Even then, from what i’ve learned it also depends on what the breeder’s goal was in their selections each generation.

If you're polling, I'll weigh in. I've been really lucky so far in that most of my grows (~14 months) have worked out as advertised. Most of my problems were caused by me, with one exception that may or may not be my fault. I grew a Mexican Airlines and it was awesome. I grew two more and they were runts that didn't give me much of anything and no usable bud. But I'm still mixed as to whether it was my fault or not.

hey, guys i've watching along curious as to what peoples thoughts were. now i don't know how true it is but i've seen online where people say that some seedbanks/breeders will also just be reselling bag seed just repackaged(hopefully someone more experienced can have some input on that). i don't wanna mention any names but what has been stated above but since switching to mephisto seeds they do follow the guide well. for a new grower. now freebies from them on other hand not so much but that could be me also. keep in mind i haven't grown many different breeders or plants

What were the breeders you were have good results with?
