A 400w HPS can cover a 4x4 (16 sq ft) area, but for better results a 3x3 space per lamp would probably give you better results. I'm not a lighting expert, though, and just started tinkering with my 400w.
How many plants and yield, there are just too many variables to answer that. Strain? Soil or not? Container size? On and on....
Your best option is to start a grow journal, so even before you crack a bean all your information is in one easy to follow place, and we can help you iron out the details.
