Lighting How many lights do I need

Wow! And when we first get our ideas they sound so simple. Then we begin setting up for our grow, only to realize there is much more we need to learn, purchase or research. We are growing our first grow in our closet. It's a typical 2.5' x 7' closet with sliding doors. We are growing 3 girls right now. It's enough right now cleaning everyday, first I vacuum then I follow up by wiping down the entire grow room with a bleach water solution. I'd love to have what is needed to be able to handle 50 plants in 5 gallon buckets, except I personally would be a nervous wreck that just one plant would get mites or mildew and wipe out my crop. Just daily maintenance would be overwhelming. You may be able to pull it off and the only way you will know is to try. Do you have the option of using the entire 120 sq ft if you need to? Best of luck to you.

I believe its more about knowledge and care for the plants as opposed to just chucking 5 grand at equipment and hoping for the best... As desert girl states I would be shitting bricks about mildew, mould or bugs... On the other hand I doo wanna see this operation up and running...

This is always the question which perplexes me most, whether to grow auto or clone photos. Every time I change my mind I lose weed because I have to break my harvest cycle in order to switch the lights and it costs me money! Well I'm committed to autos for the next 6 months and I expect my overall yield to increase and my risk to reduce (because less things to go wrong). I have grown photos and autos for commercial and I think both can be profitable if the setup is right. Someone gotta grow commercial cos not everyone has the possibility to grow their own and other people need smoke too! haha and i need to stick it to the man and avoid real work ^^

The increased electricity and seed costs are marginal considerations... I only need an extra 5% yield on a harvest to offset these extra costs, or gain a few days on the grow time.

Smokin you could plant 10 plants every 3 weeks and get a perpetual harvest going on... that works with autos even if you only got one room. I got lots of tips for this I am doing pretty much the same thing... only with much less space. Damn... if I had 120 sq ft of grow space i'd be living real nice!

Everyone here knows that good autos produce good herbs. I wouldn't believe anybody who claims to can tell the difference between autos and photos if he doesn't know which is which.

Yep it's definitely an issue. People wanna pay less if they know it's auto, round here it's like that anyway. I always tell my guys what they getting, people get very sensitive about being "cheated" when it comes to their smoke! If you don't tell em it's auto then their prejudices will never be broken... when the smoke is good I definitely wanna let them know what it is

Yer but I started out the same way and I learned pretty fast. Of course my first grow was crap but my second was very good. There's no better way to learn than practice. I did have a pretty smart guy helping me though, a great asset if you can find it.

If you gotta start out, autos are a good place to begin because they are so simple. I managed a 20-plant Think Different soil grow and it wasn't that much work. Maybe 1-2 hours a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. The plants, even though not clones, were very uniform, here's some pics:

It's true if things go wrong it will get complicated. But buy good, proven seeds and there's no reason why he would get big variations in the development of the plants. Rather than look at individuals, you have to try to see the health of the whole crop and make general adjustments based on that. It's just not practical to try to tailor the nutrients for every plant, that would be a real ball-ache

But still I would never start out with 50. Plant a packet at a time every 3 weeks... if you mess something up u will only lose 7-10 instead of 50 and your later plants will enjoy the benefit of what you learned on the earlier plants.

I would invest in a nice tent!( clean start, nog bugs no fungi)
Quality led lights! ( no need to worry about replacing lamp, fire, big bill)
Quality seeds! (not to many different phenos)
2 hydro-phonic systems!( In case one get fubar you still have one left, alot of less work than single pots)
Good line of nutes ( stonger plants get better fruits and less illness)
Good measuring devices!!! Numbers mean everything!!
:2cents:

If you are trying to figure out lighting I would certainly suggest LED as well since you have the starting capital to invest in some quality lights that will pay for themselves. Less cost for fans, nutes, and watering time.

Rather than choose a # of plants, consider the light you are going to use. A 1000W HPS covers a 4x4. You can maybe get 16, 5 gal buckets under that. a 600W will cover a 3.5x3.5 closer to 12 buckets. You could do 3 gallon pots and maybe get 25 plants under a 1000w light but why? That's a lot more work, a lot more , water/nutes, and a lot more possibility of mold/bugs/problems.

Autos would most likely yield similarly in 3 gallon or 5 gallon pots. Photos would do better in 5 gallons. What ever you choose, start a journal folks are more then happy to help along the way, and normally not as curt as some have been here. :peace:

Im using Fox farm ocean n a all purpose nutrient plus cal pills
