if a cfl isnt pointed right at the plant but its in its general area is it still gettin some light from it? like for example i have five light holes on top of my closet and if i use one bulb in it its pointing right at my plant now if i took those light spliters and i use two lights the two lights are in the general area of my plant but there pointed more away from it bein there V shaped....

That will be fine. Think about how one of those lights illuminates a room. It lights the whole room, not just the area under the light. Of course, the closer the plant is to it, the more intense the light will be.

That's all I used before, and it got the job done, but like Muddy said, the closer the plant is the better the intensity, and with CFL bulbs that's very important.

I'm using cfl also. I noticed a lot of shading on the lower part of the plant. I added some side lights and my new plant seems to be doing much better with growth that my first. I'm still only at 140w or so but it fits my space and purpose well, and with daily rotation of my plant it's growing well and getting light all over.
