yep you are about right gnome, i was looking at that same info. Carbon filters are not that expensive if you think of what its doing for you.....covering your ass. I own two at a time one is always running and the other is ready if that one fails.

I was doing some adding and might of exaggerated a little about the price. It might cost around 30-40 to make the filter. Even still, it doesn't work as good. Though, it might help some in really tight spaces.

This thread has been carbon filter scrubbed clean.
Thanks for sharing the tutorial.

Well played TBM, well played.

I fooled around with some DIY carbon stuff, and it's just not worth it IMO. For around $60 you can get a 4" filter shipped to your door - here's the one I have:

http://www.amazon.com/Carbon-Filter...UMNW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314838979&sr=8-1

I paired it with a $33 90cfm bathroom fan that runs nearly silent: http://www.amazon.com/Air-King-BFQ-...1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1314839125&sr=1-1

So for under $100, I've got a solution that will completely handle the odor of a small cabinet or tent grow. Like FD said, I'm happy to spend a few $$ if it means less chance of the LEOs kicking my door in.

Well, since I am from a country where ANYTHING related to cannabis is prohibited, we always find out a way to craft our equipment... and this is why I am sharing with you guys!
I mean, if you can build your self rather than buying REALLY overpriced ones, atleast this is my situation... here in brasil growshops are FEW and their prices are exorbitant!

This tutorial AGAIN is not my creation, It came from the biggest cannabis forum from Brasil: GrowRoom (even tough this sound "english" its rare to find an english speaking brazilian)
Its been published there, kindly, by GROWER-X, it consists on a "remake" from a previous filter created by "Gabe" that was made out of "pvc" pipe, with holes drilled on it.

"The good thing about this filter I am gonna show to you guys is that it can EASILY be made into a smaller scale."

This Charcoal filter should be way more effective, by the simple fact that its bigger than the pencilcase Ive shown earlier.
**** Thank you very much Thai Buddha Man for fixing it all up!

Lets get Started!

This is how it should look when its done:
FILTRO.JPG

The necessary material to make it are these:
materiais.JPG

Now its the big challange for me, translating the materials... I hope you guys understand. Some of them were translated with the help of google translator:

2 PVC terminals (the cap to obstruct the end of the pipe)
3 long screws with with their nuts
1 "Rim" cap for pipes and tubes, 120mm
1meter of aluminium screen (net?) with 2mm holes in it
1meter of "acrylic blanked", known here as "glass wool". This will be the "filtering net" from it's outside.
3Kg of Activated carbon pellets
1 strip of aluminium 50cm x 5cm
Some few of these "zip ties" (lol, I had to watch "I grow Chronic" and skip it until the guy speaks the name of it)

Let's go to action!

First we gonna drill a hole right in the very center of EACH of the "PVC's terminals and we gonna assemble them together with 1 screw and its nut, just like in this picture:
fundo.jpg

Now we gonna cut the aluminium NET, and its gonna be measured by the inner pvc cap, like this:
tela pvc fundo.jpg

Now lets go for the external duct, this should be a little bit SHORTER... take a looK:
duto externo.jpg

The author himself has choosen to buy an aluminium "finish" for the top of it, and so he had to "open" the net a little bit more to fit it good, but if I had to choose myself, I'd buy two pieces of the bigger PVC cap and cut a hole in the middle to fit ther inner net, but that would take more time, for sure...

Fixating the botton pvc cap in the net will be done with two screws and their nuts, BUT WATCH OUT so you don't hurt yourself! I can totally see someone hurting the armpit with it.... :S
fixando o fundo.jpg
fixando o fundo2.jpg

Now we gonna build a a specie of belt to position the hook... use the filter to measure the size but do NOT cut the "excess" of this aluminium stripe! Bend it so it get more resistant and so it can hold better!

And about the HOLE we gonna drill in it, the author said that it should be smaller than the hooks, in a way its more firm and you'll be avoiding that it gets "unnasembled", loose...

Ahh, to put the hook in the pvc area is easy as well, but keep in mind that the hole should be tigher than the hook, so it keep really well "held".

Now we shall add the foam that will be the filter, making use of the "zip ties"
lã de vidro.jpg

Now we shall fill the space between both nets with the activated charcoal!

preenchendo com carvão.jpg

and then we close it...

This is the filter done:

the backpart:
fundo final.jpg

And woah, its pretty much done!

In my humble opinion, its a great activated charcoal filter... home made... and costed CHEAP!

If you can find, afford or simply prefer... you can use the pro's:
can_filter_new.jpg

But as I said, in Brasil we can't find these... and when we can, they cost just TOO MUCH.

Some members in the forum even reported to use some sort of "motorcycle's" filter:

I hope I have helped with the translation of this tutorial! :)

Admins: FEEL FREE to fix it, correct my terrible english!

I am actually really sorry that I couldn't make it better... but well... I tried!

Good luck for all! :)
