I have been reading about hempy style growing. I have not seen much on AFN about it. As I consider this the site of knowledge and all that is true, I would like to hear some thoughts on hempy growing. I am currently growing in soil.

I've been researching this recently and reading numerous threads on this topic.. My understanding of it is that it's the 'poor man's hydro'. Many growers that done it swear by its simplicity and the results. However threads are old and it seems like it's not a popular method nowadays.
I just cannot understand the workings behind it - how do the roots not rot? Leaving a 'reservoir' layer on the bottom of the pot that is absolutely soaked with water with no aeration or drainage seems to go against all instincts does it not? And yet strangely enough I couldn't find many threads on rot problems in hempy buckets.
Another question worth asking is this - as far as I know hempys became popular for the fast growth rates and good yields vs regular pots. With air-pruning pots we have widely available and documented to work today, would the effects not be the same?

Maybe some hempy expert can educate us

I noticed too that a lot of the posts were older. I think the root rot is taken care of because if you water every two or three days it changes out any stagnate water at the bottom. I love the idea of a poor man's hydro and to me the main benefit of hydro for a personal use grower is the cleanliness. I am a freak about cleaning up soil messes and there are a lot of them. For your average grower MHO soil is a lot more forgiving but this may be a way to combine the two. Also I happen to be sitting on a lot of perlite right now as a result of misreading an amount on an amazon order.

I have around four grows under my belt with hempy and it is simple and it is easy. You need the same tools as you would need to do any other hydro set ups. I would say there isn't much of a problem with root rot is because of the amount of air that flows through the pot. The growth rate isn't as fast at first but you can really tell when the roots hit the rez at the bottom of your pots.On average I'd say it takes around two weeks for the roots to find the rez. I have started seeds in seedling trays and then moved them to the hempy buckets. My advice would be to start them in a root starting cube of some kind it will be a whole lot easier and way less headache. Put a whole two inches from the bottom of the of your pot for the rez. I believe hempy is passive hydro and or drain to waist. Just figure out what media you want to use,100% perlite, perlite vermiculite, coco hempy. it's really up to you.

This is a pretty good right up from this site in the hydro section. This will get your gears to moving.

Will give you my holy hempy bucket story tomorrow with all I have learn during this 3 years of hempy growing.

Thanks guys. I put a hole 2 inches from the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and filled it to that point with perlite then went 3 parts perlite to 1 part vercilmite. I have been running water through it just trying to get a feel for it. I plan to use the tiered method and cut a solo cup in half stick in the mix and fill it with jiffy starter mix then plant. Any Info that you have would be greatly appreciated. I have a sprout in soil that is a week old and I will probably move it into the hempy mix tomorrow.

Bob Hope-6.jpgI have been happily hempy growing in Coco coir over a bed of hydration for some time now I use canna nutes and a 630 watt dPappillon light... I believe hempy to be the most cost effective and simplest form of hydro... I love it, it is very forgiving and alows you to miss a couple of waterings and still come home to healthy plants... I highly recommend hempy on coir.

One thing I noticed with my grows under leds and depending on how hot it gets in your grow space I didn't have to water two times a day during the seedling stage. Most grows are watered twice a day till the roots hit the rez but most journals I've seen the grower is using HPS with a large amount of heat. I was watering mine every other day and that was with 100% perlite. With your mix your pot should stay wet longer. Like I said tho, depending on how hot it gets in your grow space. Another thing I noticed leds grow the hell out of that green algae and fast. I covered my perlite with landscape cloth so the pot could still breath. The excellent air flow from your hole at the bottom of the pot to the top you need to keep flowing if you cover with any thing. I had a sweet seed auto get to over three feet. My problem with this method wasn't the method but myself, I didn't buy the tools needed for success I just winged it. It's a good way to grow some monster plants. Once you get things dialed in you may never turn back.

That is a nice grow there distiller.

Wow that hempy sticky is an amazing resource - again best thread I read on the topic - you guessed it, on AFN :)
Thanks for all the replies everyone this is very exciting and that looks like a forest, distiller :Cool bud:
I'm guessing though hempy would not be suited to a scrog grow since you do need to tip/pick up the bucket to gauge the watering?
