Hey, I'm growing in my closet. I've ordered seeds from herbies and I am going to be using a 400watt hps mh builds. My question is my plants will be in my closet in my room so how Often do I need to open my closet door n leave the window open to get fresh air?

With a MH/HPS you will need constant fresh air. HID's burn hot. If you do not have proper ventillation then it will not work. If you leave your closet door open with a fan blowing in with cool air you may stand a chance. But you must vent the hot air out somewhere.

It will end in fail if your running a MH/HPS without proper ventilation. Those lights can get so hot that you can be burnt by it if its unvented.

Do you think growing in a unused room that has a small window and keeping that window open will provide the fresh air and keep cool?

No you will need to push out air as well as pull fresh air in. I would recommend using a cool tube with an HPS or HID lighting system. Another solution would be to use an LED grow light, less heat but you will still need to bring in fresh air. Just opening a window will not work very well. You will also need a fan in the grow room to keep the air circulating and the plants moving (dancing) this helps build strong stalks

Imagine your light as a mini oven. You have to force air into it to cool it. No ands ifs and buts. You will see though once you plug it in.

This sucks. Totally speechless. I bought all this and now ventilation is going to kill me.

Well the issue is your trying to grow in a closet. The air will be trapped. You need cool air in hot air out...one for heat but another good reason is moisture build up...where do you think the water that drys up from your plants goes...the plant uses a lot a lot of lost from evaporation...that all has to go somewhere. If your not exchanging air you can get a mold build up and once you get that forget your plants.

A lot of us that grow have these...inline fan with attached carbon filter...sucks heat moisture and kills and odor.

Thats why closet grows suck usually as do sheds, attics.

A HID light wastes a enormous amount of its energy in the form of heat..the rest light which your plant uses. Just the nature of the game when your lighting up something so bright from a bulb.

A good example of the heat generated is go grab a light bulb a incandescent. I bet if its a simple 60 watt bulb you won't be able to hold it long at all. Now imagine 400 watts from a bulb thats about as thick as your arm and 8-10 inches long...lots of heat generation.

Its fixable though...easily many grow with HID lights. You just have to have continuous exhaust running to cool it. Its also why grow tents are popular...you can put fan inside or on top of the tent and suck out all the hot air.

Another thing...when your growing your basically creating a micro environment but inside. Cannabis grows best 70-85 degrees You can above somewhat but grow slows. Below 60 not a good thing either. With that light turned on in a closet with no air exchange depending how warm it is in your house your talking a 20-30 degree increase from the heat trapped..easily.

I have a 800w LED and with my inline fan on max my tent is about 80 degrees right now...should I turn it off my tent gets about 100 degrees and pretty fast. My plants would be toast should my fan fail.
