Lighting Help Me Pick My Light for $200

I think your math needs some work, your certainly not running a 1000 watt HPS for $12.00 a month. Growing an auto at say, 20/4 @ $0.12/kwh will cost $72 per 30 days. 30 days of 12/12 will cost $43.20. And If your power is $0.12/kwh total of all power company charges, I'll move there because I buy mu electricity @ $0,6.9/kwh, but delivery charges bring it to $0.15/kwh.........

HPS: 30% efficient
COB LED: 50%+ efficiency
That efficiency translates to more light per watt as well as much less heat. 600 watts of COB led will produce the the same amount of light, with 66% less heat. How much does that save in airconditioning costs?
Cobs aren't ready? Where you been hiding... HPS growers think 1/gpw is great, not many growers hit even that. 1.5 gpw with cobs is a realistic average for COB lighting.

And how about this, grow: 4'x4' space, 4 COBs @ 55watts each totaling 210 watts: ( pick is a couple weeks opld, go see BigSm0's grow )

You can have your HPS. I'll spend more now to save later. And I can build an LED light to match or exceed that hps for $500. No, not cheap as hps, but a far superior spectruum, less heat, and more photons. The only thing HPS has going for it anymore is cheap start up cost....... Till you add in airconditioning etc to deal with heat...

no offense to knoop n if yur in uk where electric is issue then mayb thats a good choice.in us.....cobs aint shit yet.just cause of what u need to build an equivalent to 1000hps.u said it cost $170ish to get 30k lumens...so thats $850 to make where it to my light..only cost me $12 a month to run

:greencheck: :smoking: don't bother responding to kkeniff friends, that know-it-all = nothing deluded asshat liar has been banned permanently already for running his shite-stinking gob at me in the Infirmary,.. a classic leg-lifter attempting to show his grow-dick is the biggest around, and we're all here to worship it! :finger: :pimphand: :deadhorse: --- pop22- $12/mo for a 1000w light, riiiight,...:nono:

Lysergic'-- for that money, it's a harder call than it seems,... the up front cost is one thing (HID will be cheaper for sure) , but the longer term costs are a factor to consider,... with HID, you have higher power costs and high quality bulbs to replace down the road, plus cooling costs... LED/COB are more spendy up front, but less expensive to run over time,... it comes down to how badly or soon you need, or want a light vs. what you can cough up extra,.. Oh- how big an area are we talking about? that's just a little important,.. ...the worry with cheap LED's (and we're seeing this with some Mars units more and more ) is not so much if they are effective-- many grows here prove they're pretty good-- it's how quickly diodes burn-out (despite claims), and other electronic bugs,... but most likely, with some skills, good instruction from here, a DIY COB unit will offer the best of performance, reliability/durability, and costs,... Let us know about the space size you have, that's a big determining factor,.. And you know we have a phaaaat Lighting section here too!

Hmmm no where in that comment did you mention the autocob being the most affordable prebuilt fixture, or that it can be easily expanded at the growers pace.

Just messin

anyways yes I strongly disagree with foolish claims on energy free hps. People are learning and learning fast. Photons as Pop mentioned are the main factor. How many you get from each light or more importantly how many photons per watt. That's efficiency and cobs have proven to be the most efficient light source around

I shoulda known....... he got bs detector going..........

WOW yeah Id say. 1000W dimable ballast is your best bang for your buck? nope, grow style certainly does not impress me in the slightest.,then you got power consumption. dude, LOL! talk about got damned dumb with a no dick situation. well sorry. he IS a dick just trying to show everyone he is the man. well enjoy that MAN trophy you got buddy all by yourself. ;) and again with autos VEG spectrums tend to do best ime anyways within organics,so no dual specs needed so less money spent. YUP dumber than a box of rocks lmfao!! gimme a break this guy.

Perfect response !

I hesitate to jump into this one. People take lighting choices seriously, and there's a lot of strong opinions. So here's my opinion, for what it's worth. (not much compared to some of these guys)

I really like my cheap Viparspectra 450 for a 2x3 tent. I also like the small Mars Hydro 300's. I use them together and love it. I have used HPS/MH lights, and think they are the best choice in cold environments.

That being said, I will be making a cob or two when I am able to have a larger grow area. The cost of filling up a room with off the shelf lights is equal or more than DIY. COB's are clearly superior, but your gonna have to either pay a ton, or build one yourself.

to conclude:
HPS/MH -- low efficiency, low cost, high heat, high electrical usage, great canopy penetration
LED off the shelf -- medium efficiency, low cost, low heat, poor canopy penetration
COB/DIY -- high efficiency, medium cost, low heat, canopy penetration varies
