Hello AFN! Newbie grower here, first auto plant:

strain: heavyweight fast and vast
age: week 9 from sprout
soil: organic, 50% worm castings, 50% local potting soil + perlite and vermiculite.
outdoor, 12/12 since seed (i live in the tropics where we only have 2 seasons and its usually 12/12 outside)
temps: 32-38 celcius when there's sun. around 20-24 at night.
nutrients: local hydro nutes (2-part), molasses, and koolbloom

breeder's time frame says 8 weeks but it obviously isn't. I'm having a hard time estimating harvest for this plant. seems like a long way to go but some buds are looking ripe and it doesn't look like its getting fat :( maybe cause of the high temps. also, based on the pictures that buds aren't maturing equally so i guess i might harvest half at a time.

I was wondering what are your thoughts of this plant? if they're still gonna get fat and all. I have a loupe but i'd rather gauge on bud maturity and size so that i can get as much weight rather than harvesting too early when i saw amber (which i did on my previous plant)

Hey roundhousekick. Welcome to AFN.:Sharing One:

Ive heard great thing about the strain you chose to grow.
For 9 week. It does look to be under developed. I do see some white hairs. So, it looks like its still developing. Ive heard of some people having their fast and vast grow out not so fast. A few reports that said that anyways.

If there is anywhere that you can get it in longer house of light coverage, as I see it looks like the plants in the shade. I used to have a non cannabis plant outside at my old place, and I would move it around a couple times a day. This way it could get longer light exposure from the direct sunlight.

Looks like your trying to lean more on the organic side? Im not to sure that 50% worm castings was a good idea, as I know that its very potent. Ive not used it yet myself, but I heard to go light. So, your probably to high in N, which can constrict your yield.

Im not sure if flushing would help in this case.

Either way, it looks like its extremely frosty. So, it should be some really potent smoke. Heavy Weight seeds has solid genetics from what Ive heard/ seen.

To you original question. If you can get a magnifying glass that can get you close enough to make out if the tric heads are cloudy, clear, or amber. That would be the best way to test.

Another way to tell is if it significantly slows down on drinking water. Those few white hairs can be indications that its not exactly ripe yet, but this is not always the case.

I hope this helps friend. :pass:

rhk , I too live in the tropics , and the plant is small for it's size , the problem we have is the roots get to hot during the day and take a long time to cool down , I have checked soil temps with a probe , so even at 10 pm at night they are still in there 30s , I am still working on different ideas but a large pot seems to help , and if that is a clay pot they seem to hold the heat longer , I made some of my own pots [ 20 ltr ] and drilled heaps of holes in them and it seemed to bring the temp down a bit quicker at night , but still not real good , so now I am thinking wooden pots [ home made ] about 2 inch thick , Vermiculite I do not use as I would rather a faster drying soil so I can get some cooler water into the soil , now this is only what I have observed , I am no way sure on this as I am still working things out , there are a lot more blokes here that know way more than me that will have advice for you .

I would give airdomes a try to bring soil temperature down. Place the air pump in the coolest location within reasonable or workable distance from the plant.
Injecting air into the pots will increase evaporation, thus cooling, and at night soil temp will come down real quick to ambient. A nice little side-bonus is the increase in oxygen in the soil.

If you try this, pay attention to watering more frequently.

thanks guys, am pretty bummed about the yield but hey, it's free weed and it saves money.

so i'll try to dial down the worm castings next grow. i'll try about 20-30%, this was my first run on this specific soil mixture and it seems to be doing well, barely/slightly any nute burn with full str feedings.

and i am planning to use an airpot for the next fast and vast grow and see how it will perform. the clay pot was just cause i had a previous grow when i planted the fav in it.

Hey brother. No need to be bumbed. I had to completley trash my first grow. Which was heart breaking. Ive also messed up a few other plants Ive had to toss. Along with a couple that the harvest was really depressingly low for all the work I put into it.
Your really going to like those air pots. I recently switched over to fabric pots, which might be better in your case. Im not sure which is better at cooling the roots. So, I would get a second opinion. Just seems like the fabric pot would be cooler for you. Since the air pot is still made out of plastic. Which would hold more heat then the fabric pot.Which breaths out of every single part of the pot. Head to toe. Sorry I didn’t comment on the heating earlier. I somehow missed that part last time I read it.

Any questions you have on anything. Feel free to PM me. Im definitely not the most knowledgeable person, but I’ve learned a few things so far. So, my services are offered in any way Im able to help. =)
