Hard seeds

I like your thinking.
I just built 1 from a nut, nyloc nut, wing nut and 1/4 machine screw.
I just drilled through the larger nut and drilled in to the threads on the other side of the large nut. then I ran a tap 1/4 UNC 20 through the hole.
I then threaded the wing nut (backwards) to the top of the machine screw then threaded the nyloc nut to secure the wing nut.View attachment 1288892
It works like a charm and if your like me and enjoy building things it is one of those projects that will keep on giving lol.
Do you seed crackers orient the seeds in any particular way to crack them, eg. pointy end up or down, or perhaps seam up and pointy end sideways? Do they always crack at the normal seam that opens?

Methinks there is a seed cracker in my future. :biggrin:

Did you have to use a bottoming tap? Taps I have aplenty, bottomers, not so much. :biggrin:

I wanted my seeds to sit in with the seam up but it is hard to get the seeds to sit that way. the seeds still seem to crack on the seam anyway it sits

Did you have to use a bottoming tap?
As for taps no bottoming tap necessary as the hole goes right through the one side of the nut. I am thinking of making another one this time I will use a smaller drill bit for a pilot hole and let that smaller bit make my divot (where the seed sits) at the bottom so I can have a little more seed control when I crack em. I also thought about not drilling in to the bottom side and using a triangle file to make a groove that may hold the seed with the seam up and down.

Ultimately I have been looking at a 3D printer and plan to design exactly what I want in a seed cracker.
If that happens I will let everyone know if I achieve success and they could be available.

Yeah, I was thinking seam up might be best. The design thinking cap is on. I think I am with you on a groove being the right seat for the seed. Even a square bottom groove with the right width might be good. If I had a lot of seeds, testing might be easier... If I come up with anything that might be helpful, I will post. I would love a tag if you post more on this.

I love doing this stuff. :biggrin:
 
Perhaps try soaking them in water, like in a shot glass. Assuming you have only used the paper towel method on these?
