Hello all..

Hope your all havin a great Christmas break from work..
I had a real shock last night, I turned my lights off for the switch over to 20/24 once they had come back on the whole plant was covered in little droplets ofwhat I belive to be water. I quickly got on the net and tried to find out what it was, it was called guttation..
so what is guttation? From what I have red it occurs at night when water pressure is high in the roots, the pressure pushes the solution up the plant where it is not needed(its dark) so forces the sap/solution out of the leaves.
apparently its not a problem, but wastes good nutrient and water.. I just wondered if there was a way to stop it?

Im sure somebody will have the answer to my question??

Peace
love

Respect

pic is of my current grow, day 15 with guttation...

Ok.. So my lights have been off three times now and its still happening, has anybody else growing in dwc style experienced this?? It wasnt a problem at first but now it is leaving residue on the leaves which is apparently rich in nutrient and sugar, I dont want this dew to start burning my leaves..
It even started happening once I moved the light away for 5 mins. I am now noticing the plant is drinking lots of water through the day and is growing vigorously, it just doesnt stop drinking in the dark??

Should I have kept it on 24/24??
How can I stop this??

Any info about this would be so usefull..

Peace...

Does your temperature drop significantly when the lights go out? I'm not even sure if there is a correlation there, but in my head I'm drawing theories....

Not only is transpiration changing, but also, at night temperature drops. Temperature affects metabolism, so maybe the closing of the stomata at night isn't the only thing causing this, but a combination of factors. If It is loosing (presumably) ability to uptake water because it is cooler, this may cause the some pressure differences that seem to play into guttation, if I am on the right track.

Has this happened to you before, and or in other systems? How much was the day/night temps varying then? I had a kiwi pair that only showed guttation when I had a particularly cool evening, and as it got closer to winter dormancy (think: loosing speed of metabolism)

Thanks for your response its good to have somebody else thinking about this one..im stumped..
Temps in day are at 23-24oC land too to no less than 20 at night. The guttation appears in minutes after raising light, it doesnt even have to be dark.. currently dont have hydrometer so humidity is unknown, I have two high powered pc fans in unit, one extracting air which empties room 10x per min, and one blowing over plant.
The only thing I can think to try is turning down my airpump, less bubbles less pressure maybe?? But will they starve of air??
As I have said the plant is growing at an amazing pace so it cant be stressing it, just slowly going to burn its leaves off..
This is my first dwc grow so your thoughts and help is apreciated..

I grow soil so I am of limited help. I'm still thinking of whats going on here, it is a learning process for me, to gain some experience as well.

Wish I was of more help to you, I will continue to do some reading and thinking. I wouldn't freak about it just yet, you said it wasn't showing any obvious bad signs right? also I'm not sure if turning down your air would help, but again, I am a soil grower, anyways, it seems to me that turning it up might help more than turning it down....just my :2cents:

Thanks Dr,
Seems I may have a few people stuck on this one, no it is not serious at the min, but residue on leaves is increasing by the day, thanks for your thoughts into this anomaly, im not sure about decreasing air, what creates more pressure the water or the bubbles? hopefully we'll get it sorted..

Thai Buddha,

My airpump stays on constantly, as I should, right??? My system is just a straight dwc oxypot, no recirculation..
From what I can see it looks like my plant does not want to sleep, can this be the case??

Im still very stuck on this one, I did read somewhere that it could stop when the plant gets bigger(if it does, its an auto).
Im updating pics today on grow.. As u will see the maxi is going strong..

Many thanks for your input guys..

Peace..

Plants usually eliminate water as vapor during transpiration through the stomata - Gutation takes place through structures called 'hydathodes' when transpiration is under constraint due to excessive humidity and high ambient temperatures. Gutation may also occur when the growing medium is saturated for long periods of time.

What are your night temperatures/humidity? Are you growing above a boiler or a warm place?

I notice you don't have a hygrometer to hand - If you suspect the humidity to be the source of the problem then try watering less frequently and increase your out take. An alternative approach would be to install a de-humidifier :D

When I ran dwc buckets, I would run my pumps either:
1) 5mins on/10mins off 24hrs/day
or
2) constant during lights on & 15mins on/15mins off during lights off

Might be worth giving either of them a shot.
My preference would be though (but never got to run it) constant during lights on & 5mins on/10mins off during lights off

this is some top info thai buddha, i never even considered turning my bubbles off, i will give this a try on lights off tonight..

i can only try..
many thanks..
