Lighting Grow Northern Live Tech Talk

Here is a picture of a Holographic diffuser (on the left) and a traditional diffuser (on the right)

So... why are you calling it "Holographic", how is it related to holograms?

Certainly the diffuser makes the light gradient a smoother, and my HS1 is quiet and efficient...what does that have to do with holograms? Is there some break through technology in the diffuser? It seems to me that diffusers of this quality have been available for years, for example on camera flashes.

produce a homogenous distribution of intensity across the beam angle

Homogeneous means same, uniform. Are you saying the the intensity is uniform within the flood of the difusser, a 60x60 degree diffuser for example. But the light from the HS1 is more intense directly under the LED and the the intensity declines smoothly and dramatically every degree away from the center. The intensity drops to less than 50% before the edge of the 60 degree beam.

Maybe I misunderstood "Beam Angle"? If I have a 60x60 diffuser is the beam angle 60 degrees?

Did you want to say the HS1 has a smoother gradient than most LEDS? That is probably accurate.

If you are really saying the light intensity is the same within the angle of the diffuser, then I seem to have a defective HS1

I posted this not long after I got my first HS1,I think it demonstrates well how evenly distributed the light is....

Pretty similar at 30cm but it's easy to see the difference at the other distances.

Mr TaNg, you are amazing... don't you sleep?

The photos you posted definitely show how smooth the gradient is. The diffuser really helps.
I am not sure I would call it evenly distributed. It seems to be more intense in the center and fading smoothly towards the edges. There seems to be a distinct hot spot in the center.

Maybe I am a little sensitive on this issue because I believed the Grownorthern marketing and I really thought I was buying an LED that would put an even spread of light across my grow room. With a 60 x 90 diffuser in a 1.2 x .6 room the light in the center should be the same intensity as the light in the corners. I set up my grow room for exactly that.

Does that make me naive, a rube, a sucker. I don't know, but it doesn't feel very good.

The light IS quiet, it IS efficient, and the diffuser does smooth the gradient. And your grows with the HS1 look fantastic.
I think Grownorthern could tone down the marketing and be more direct.

Should a buyer need to study the technical meaning of Homogeneous Distribution just to know what to expect from the HS1? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homogeneous_distribution

The product works well, it doesn't need fancy language or marketing hype, that just creates expectations that can't be met.

And while I am ranting. :gassy:

Who is Jeremy at Grownorthern? I had the uncomfortable feeling that Jeremy is not a person, but a label used by whatever Filipino support person is available when the Grownorthen chat starts. Pretending to be a person with a nice British name bothers me. They could just say tech support.

Maybe I am wrong, that was just my feeling.

Your feelings are very amusing and very wrong,I met Dan and Jeremy at Spannabis last year along with the DP team, all lovely blokes....saying that it could have been a holograph of Jeremy I was taking to I can't be 100% on that lol.

HubbaBubba; I found some information about holographic diffusers in general:

"Holographic diffusers, a type of Holographic Optical Element (HOE), give a higher transmission of light than typical ground or opal glass diffusers. Because of their design, holographic diffusers also offer a more even distribution of light. Holographic diffusers can increase transmission efficiency to greater than 90% from filament lamps, LEDs, arc lamps, and other sources. It is important to note that diffusing angles listed for these diffusers are for collimated light and angular divergence will vary for different incidence angles."

This is actual term used by the industry dealing with the technology. It is not sales pitch or misleading marketing. I can say with testing out my first HS1 that it gives the most even distribution for a LED light I have ever seen. That is not to say that it is 100% even, ofcourse there is higher intensity on the middle there but not to a degree like with anything else I've seen.

Thanks Tang, I am wrong a lot. I appreciate you not taking offense. I will pipe down now.
