Indoor Grow #1- Crop King Northern Lights Autofem- DWC-CFL

I really wanted to grow them all the way through with no transplant of any kind.. That was the whole point of starting them in the DWC. but I suppose what I did was no more stressful than moving them into the setup from a starter tray, so hopefully I'll be fine. Next time I will know to start things off lower in the pot..

Day 12:

After doing some research, and freaking out a little after resetting the plants lower in the pot, I am comfortable that I didn't damage them. They seem to be starting to take off. I also feel more comfortable about the girls not being too small for their age. There has been significant growth since I moved them deeper into the pot. I think the one on the right finally hit the wet spot in the hydroton. No roots showing yet, but man, I looked last night and she was standing straight the fuck up stretching at the light like superman! I got a tingly feeling all over that had me feeling like lowering them was absolutely the right thing to do. Here is a pic of both of them..

The girl on the left in the above photo, when I removed them to lower, had a much shorter root. There is actually a little piece of root that is visible on the TOP of the rockwool, so I'm not sure what the deal is with her. Especially considering the fact that she is already sprouting her 4th set of leaves, whereas the other is only on her 3rd. It is kinda weird to me that the one with shorter roots is growing faster on top. Also, she is the shorter of the two at this point. Here she is..

The girl on the right(in the first pic) is the one that was standing up last night. I should have gotten a pic of that. It gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside when I saw it. The two uppermost leaves were just REACHING up forming a "V" as if to say "HERE I GO!!!". She seems a little behind lefty in leaf production, but I'm okay with it. Here SHE is...

I'm really not sure what happened with the first set of leaves. They got brown spots toward the tips and then just got crispy all around the edges. I couldn't find anything that I did wrong, and saw some people here and there saying that it just sometimes happens on the first set. The new growth looked fine(and still does), so I decided just to let them go and see what happened. I'm glad I did, and didn't go trying to "fix" them. Everything looks great on both plants above that first set.

There are still 2 more days left in week 2, and I am anticipating the girls starting to really take off during week 3. At least I hope they do. I'll bet once they finally hit the water for real they are going to explode. I can't wait to experience that for the first time. If anyone has any insight into why the first set of leaves did what they did, I would appreciate some feedback to prevent it happening on my next grow. I feel like I have already learned a lot, and already have some adjustments planned for grow #2.

Thanks in advance for any feedback on the leaf issue, and if anyone is watching, thanks for tagging along!

FINALLY! The first root emerged from the bottom of the net-pot! Oddly enough, it was from Lefty, whose roots were significantly shorter than Righty when I moved them deeper. Lefty is working on her 4th leaf set. Righty is still on her third set.

Hop digity

Day 13:

Fresh pics to discuss the possibility of FIMing the girls.

This is "Lefty". She is showing her 4th set of leaves. She just finally shot a root out of the bottom of the net pot today..

This is "Righty". She is showing her 3rd set of leaves, and hasn't yet punched through the hydroton. I expect that to happen any minute. lol

I am interested in doing a FIM on both of them when they are ready to keep the canopy more even and hopefully get more top colas going to possibly increase the yield.

waz up green? your thread was camoflouge somehow.lmao as far as doin a fim bro. can I suggest fim the one that is behind, just in case things don't go well you will still have a healthy plant. reason I say is I usually don't fim one unless they are super healthy but yours look like they are in full gear these last couple days so if you wanna do it I will pm you tomorrow evening with more detailed ideas. it would be best to wait a few more days. if you fim on 4th node you will get between 10-12 colas.if you do on 3rd she will be lil taller with only 8-10 colas. I use the cut method instead of the pinch method, this where I learned how to do http://www.growweedeasy.com/training#fiming if your sure you want to try, pm me tomorrow. peace green

oh yeah bro. as far as your leaf issues, I no nothing about dwc or dwc nutes,ph. sorry bro, maybe post in live help thread.

I'm really not sweating it. They haven't gotten worse, and all of the growth beyond that first set looks fine.

Day 16:

Firstly, thanks Faded187, for all of your help with the FIM information! I feel much more comfortable now.

Changed the res water today. I bumped up the nutes to 1/2 strength. I am using the feeding charts that Humboldt nutrients has on their site, so the doses increase every week according to that, but I am using those numbers and adjusting them to a percentage point. So today's res change went by the week 3 amounts on the schedule, cut to 1/2 strength. The amounts actually increased quite a bit more than 1/4 from the last res, because the amounts in the schedule increase weekly. So I hope I am working that right. I suppose we'll find out pretty quickly.

Here is a pic of the girls in my cabinet.

They seem to be much shorter than one would expect at 16 days. The growth seems to be on track otherwise. Lefty is a bit ahead in growth, and has some new leaf sets forming where the branches connect to the main stalk. I raised the lights up to around 2 feet above the plants to hopefully encourage some stretching. I would like them to start getting a bit taller, and anticipate a bunch of growth over the next 10 days. I have been keeping the lights really close, so that is most likely why they have stayed so short. But it's time to let them spread their wings! Time will tell.
20150312_125929.jpg

Here is Lefty. She is the faster of the two plants so far. She is showing her 5th set of leaves, and is getting some growth in the crotches now. She will be left to grow naturally, but will be getting some LST in a week or so, depending on whether or not I can get her to start stretching upward.
20150312_125959.jpg

Here is Righty. She is a bit behind, even though they both sprouted on the same day. She will be the plant I am going to FIM. I think this will be a pretty good experiment. I am basically going to FIM the plant that is ALREADY behind and see what happens. The other plant has more leaf sets, more undergrowth, and overall actually seems a bit more healthy to me, just based on growth and time.
I will be fimming her at the 4th node. I will do this sometime in the next 3 days. Basically, when I feel that the 4th set of leaves are big enough to get hold of and cut. But before the 5th set is any more than a tiny sprout.
20150312_125950.jpg

If the FIM is successful, and I end up yielding more from Righty, I will most likely FIM the majority of my plants going forward.

I will detail the FIM when it happens.

Wish me luck!

The girls have already really perked up since the res change with the higher nutrient volume!
