Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

I am feeling fairly comfortable as far as security is concerned, using Tor since the inception of this account, and all EXIF data is being stripped from any photos, so I am going to document this first attempt.

I built my cabinet from scratch, and am still in need of filtration. I am considering budget options on that front, and hope to have it figured out in the first month. The box is in my garage, so hopefully the odor won't become too bad before I get filtration worked out. As long as it stays contained in the garage until then, I'll be fine. The grow is going to be done with two plants(Crop King Seeds Northern Lights Auto Fem) in one 3.5 gallon DWC. I am using Humboldt nutrients. The three part basic system. I have extensively researched my tap water and decided to grow in it. The water reports in my area suggest a ppm of between 150 and 220ppm out of the tap. Calcium seems pretty good, and magnesium seems a bit low. I may end up supplementing with epsom salts if the need arises.

My cab has a pretty powerful small fan, looks like around 260cfm, which is mounted at the top. When facing up and raised to the hole, it creates good negative pressure. When faced inward, it is keeping 70-80 degree temperature in a 28 degree garage.

The lighting is around 40,000 lumens(about 250 actual watts) of CFL light, mixed between 6400k and 2700k. I will probably be adding in more as needed, for side coverage, depending on my cab's temperatures.

My seeds arrived two days ago from Crop King. They were stealthily packaged with a cell-phone case, and the return address listed a cell phone accessory company. lol
Shipping took 7 days from the shipping notice, so 8-9 days in total.

I soaked the seeds in tap water with a ph of around 6(no meter, so I am using the test drops) for 12 hours. I did add a very very small quantity of micro and grow to the first res, and took my cup of water from that. No taproots yet when they were pulled from the cup.

After soaking, I put the seeds into two separate rock-wool cubes and covered them over. The cubes had been pre-soaked for about an hour in the res. I lightly squeezed them and replaced them in the res several times throughout this process. I then put the cubes into the net-pot and surrounded them with the medium, leaving the tops exposed, and leaving them low enough to cover later.

Normally, the res will be recessed through the floor of the cabinet to keep the water cool, and give me more headroom, but for now, I have covered the hole and put the whole thing actually in the cabinet to keep the water warm. It's cold outside the box.

Next, I placed a glass cover over the res to raise and contain the humidity, and lowered the lights to just several inches above the dome to encourage warmth and humidity inside.

So now it is a waiting game. It has only been about 12 hours, so I am trying to be patient. I am excited. Here is a picture of what I am working with...

Wish me luck, folks!

No signs of life yet. I am trying to be patient, but find myself checking it all day. lol. Checked the ph in the reservoir yesterday morning, and it had drifted upward quite a bit. Adjusted it back down, and it is still looking good this morning. I am feeling really impatient, but I am fighting it.

Peekaboo....

Good Luck Friend! I've been looking at crop king seeds recently & love Northern Lights so I will be following this grow most definitely. It also seems that you have germinated your seeds on my birthday haha!

I am calling today "Day 1".

I planted two seeds in the one DWC just in case one didn't make it. If they both do, then I will let them both go, but it is looking like one may not make it. Not sure what happened, but one of the seedlings' leaves seem to have a brown slimy look to them, perhaps the tips rotted or something. In any case, I don't expect it to open all the way up and make it. I could be wrong, but that is how it looks to me. I will give it the rest of the week to make sure. Here is a pic of her, although I wasn't able to get a pic that really shows what I am talking about.

The other seedling is definitely a keeper, and looks to be developing correctly. It is still really early, but I am much more confident that this one is going to be healthy.

One plant is probably a safer bet in a single system anyway, but if they both end up taking off, I am going to train them in opposite directions and see what I can do with two. I am glad I planted two at this point, either way.

Day 3:

Despite my previous thoughts on the matter, it looks like both girls are gonna make it!

I decided to fiddle with the plant I thought was a gonner, and it turns out that what I thought was rot, was actually some remnant of the seed or something that was keeping the leaves from spreading. as soon as I started messing with it, it opened up to reveal the little baby! Now, it actually looks better than the other seedling! They both seem to be doing well, but the one's leaves are turned downward for some reason. Here are some pics of the babies...

This is the one that didn't spread out on its own.. Looking healthy!

Day 7:

The roots have not yet reached the water. I changed the res this morning. 1/4 strength nutrients. I lowered the water level to just about 1/4 inch above the bottom of the net pot. I had it about 1 1/2 inch above previously, just below the bottom of the rockwool.

Hopefully the roots will break through this week. I'll probably take a few cups out of the res to get it just below the pot in a few days. I have been top-watering them once or twice a day with water from the res..

Some decent growth took place in week 1, but I expect things to accelerate over this coming week. I hope.. One plant seems to be a bit behind the other, as the second sets of leaves are not growing at the same pace. Looking forward to seeing what happens over the next several days!

The one that is growing faster seems to always be tilted to the side.. I have tried turning the dwc to get the light behind it but it doesn't seem to want to correct itself. I'm sure it's no big deal, I just want it to stand up straight! I'm trying to just stay patient and not do too much.. They are weeds, after all.

Day 9:

They seem small to me.. Anyone care to weigh in?

Well, Hopefully I didn't screw anything up. I decided today that the roots should have hit the water by now. I carefully removed about half of the hydroton and took out the plants and rockwool cubes. I think the net pot is just too deep. One had a long taproot that was still a good 2.5 inches from the bottom of the pot, and the other had a much shorter taproot. I dug the hydroton out deeper, and carefully replaced the plants, trying to keep the taproots facing down and fill in around them. Hopefully they can find their way down quickly now. The rockwool cubes now sit about 2.5 inches below the top of the the dwc lid, but I figure as long as I didn't screw them up, I should be able to fill them up once I get a bit more vertical growth. I have my fingers crossed. I was trying to be patient, but they just really seemed to be having trouble breaking through to the water. Say a prayer for me, or what ever you do..
