Live Stoners Greetings and Salutations, AFN

Welcome to the auto flower network we have a great family here an glad to have ya in it great intro .

Hello OSP !

You win the award for the most detailed into of the year. Good for you my friend. Welcome to our home............eP.

Really a superb intro! Feel free to PM, tag or quote me if you want to shoot the breeze about some strains selections.

Greetings, Boyz 'n Girls, OSP here. I've been hanging out at another forum for several years doing photoperiod grows & doing my best to help our new growers become proficient at the craft of growing connoisseur-quality weed . So allow me to introduce myself!
I'm an experienced grower (this year celebrates the 44th anniversary of my first grow!!!)
Over the years I did guerilla-style outdoor grows (grew a plant in a tree once :vibe:no shit). I took a bit of time off from growing while my son passed through his impressionable years, but once he was out of school I felt the need to get back into it. So, about 16 years ago I got tired of dodging rattlesnakes and helicopters & moved indoors. As this transitioned I moved to 100% hydro. I've traditionally done ebb 'n flood tray multi-plant grows, and experimented with DWC, RDWC NFT and some low-tech / low pressure aero.
Back when I was working hard at growing SOG, it wasn't unusual for me to maintain several mother plants, each under a 65W CFL. This got out-of-hand, so I ended up building a bonsai mother system RDWC system on a 4' wide shelf under three 42W CFL's, alongside a 15 - 30 node cloner in a simple aero system. The bonsai mother system was capable of holding up to (24) mothers (I never reached past 5 or 6 though), and kept the clones coming to feed a perpetual 400W veg SOG into a 600W HID bloom system. Ran like a well oiled machine if I do say so myself.

But this system brought out a hidden weakness in me - tossing an old-friend / favored strain mother when another came along, and saying goodbye forever to a well researched pheno. So several years ago I picked up a small 2X2X5'3" Secret Jardin tent, with the full good intentions of using it for CFL Bonsai parentals for backup seed making to complement my RDWC Bonsai mothers. Logic being, the feminized seeds would take practically no space, and the pheno would be saved for future use as my tastes requested. Good plan. But, with one of my photoperiod seed orders, some smart-assed inconsiderate breeder :crying:threw in some freebie autoflower seeds, and this eventually led to my downfall.
Next thing I know I'm online-late-at-night outfitting the tent with a 250W HID cooltube reflector, a couple of 170CFM centrifugal fans and a Phresh carbon filter. Before I knew it I've built a 4 gal. Flow n'Gro system and dropped my first autoflower strain - a World of Seeds Northern Lights / Big Bud Auto strain. This was a beautiful strain that stretched well and responded SOOOO well to LST, producing 6.5 oz in 85 days. I'd done some G-13 / Big Bud grows early on in my indoor days, so I felt I was somewhat prepared to judge the resulting auto product. Well, the Northern Lights influence was trippy enough to stand in for the G-13, and the Big Bud influence certainly helped the yield. From that day forward I was hooked.
It's a good thing because I never got around to using the tent for parentals / breeding / backup seed making:naughtystep:
Next thing I know, I'm meeting with skepticism everything I'm reading about how great LED lighting technology is. And I'm sitting back smoking a bowl and calling Bullshit on all the wild assed cockamamied claims on how a 5 watt LED can grow 23 pounds of weed in 37 minutes and run so cool that you'd need to run a heater in your grow room during a summertime grow. So research sez, ya won't know if ya don't try. So after deciding I'm not going to shell out a couple of thousand on suspect technology, I ended up with a MARS-II 700 and their new 2'3" X 2'3" X 5'3" tent, and building another Flow n'Grow system to mirror the original HID system.
First LED grow - TH Seeds' Auto Original Auto Original BubbleGum - 11.76 oz in 84 days. Enough to convince my skeptical mind that LED was the way to go? Welllllll, maybe... but not so fast.
I'd previously grown the same strain under my 250W HID, and it did 7.3 oz in 75 days. The bud density, appearance, taste and smoke quality were comparable from both grows. But the HID grow stretched quite nicely during transition / early bloom, whereas the LED grow NEVER stretched. I was worried at first that this would be a shit-yield / fuck all LED lights in the ass, etc., etc. The plant never went beyond 10" tall above the Flow n'Grow net pot. But as it matured, with LST it almost filled the 2'3" square tent, and the yield spoke for itself - 11.76 oz in 84 days.
It actually beat out my previous best HID / autoflower yield of 11.2 oz from GreenHouse Seeds Kalashnikova Auto.
Happy happy happy.

(I don't think this is working. If this post does not have a budporn pic right above this, someone pls instruct me on how to post a pic on this forum :). I normally host the image on tinypic and paste the url into my thread ???)

So, here I am today. I've shut down all my HID gear (but kept it for now just in case), and I'm looking forward to fulfilling my wife's medical needs with single-plant autoflower grows. She smokes a LOT, so these damned autoflowers better produce!!! (ha ha).
I've bought a second MARS PRO II Cree-128 with its own tent.
I've put (13) autoflower grows behind me, and you would think that would be enough to know what I'm doing??? Welll, kind of. But the more I learn the more questions I have. I guess it's in my nature to question authority. So I Found this site, been lurking around as I learned to navigate a new forum, and now I'm signing up.
I hope to get some good experienced answers on best strains for yield-per-plant and medical needs.
I'm into a theory that HID's produce better stretch than LED's, and LED's may be better for bloom / bud settings.
I'm still REALLY curious about purported claims that autoflowers don't need the nute strengths that photoperiods may need. The less-is-more theory?
I've developed a lot of growing experience over the past several decades, and I look forward to trying to help out our beginner growers.
So if I can't find it, I guess we'll need to build it.

Or as the venerable Joe Cocker once said,
"I get by with a little help from my friends"
I look forward to seeing you all around the AFN.

I'm new to this site as well as well with autos photos are my thing but like you I to was up at night and and by the he am I two cart filled and being shipped to my house by end of the week. From reading your post I diffinetly will be following up with you. You I can tell have wisdom and questions that have knowledge in them. Welcome to the club. Gotta love old Joe Cocker.

Many thanks to all the warm welcomes, AFN!!! Been away enjoying a break in the winter for a couple of days. Not sure what was different when I posted my original Intro, none of the pic's I wanted to include worked. Back tonight with a not-so-clear head & "same way" worked this time. Ennyways, pics / bud porn added to post # 1.
Be seein' ya!

Thanks for the offer to shoot the breeze about strain selection, GS.
Frankly, I've been a bit perplexed with Dutch Passion strains so far. Blackberry Kush was one of the most beautiful plants I've ever grown. The high of this strain was was great, but yield was awful and taste was worse. Loser.
Cinderella Jack was a winner with acceptable yields, great high and taste. Winner, could hope for better yield though.
Blue Auto Mazar is underway about 40 days now and I'm afraid its going to fall into the pitiful yield category.

I'll take you up on your offer to discuss strains / yield as soon as my tinypics pic hosting website comes back. More to follow.

My pic hosting site is back now, so off into strain results.

To set the stage, here's a little more about my grow methods. I do single plant auto grows, 4 gallon hydro ebb n’gro container flooding every two hours, General Hydroponics’ expert recirculating nutrient regimen (with personal tweaks), 2”3” X 2’3” tent, 325W LED (actual / consumed), 350-ish CFM centrifugal through Phresh carbon filters. As to yield expectations, my auto experience has trained me to be minimally pleased with 6oz, satisfied to smiling with 8oz, and hopeful for 11-12 oz per auto plant grow. With all that said, frankly, I've been a bit perplexed with Dutch Passion auto strains so far.

I'd seen kind words spoken about their strains, so last year I ordered a batch of Dutch Passion auto's - Blackberry Kush, Cinderella-Jack, Auto-Mazar and Blue Auto-Mazar. The first strain I dropped was the Blackberry Kush, looking to the Blueberry influence for pain relief for the wife's medical needs. I don't recall ever seeing seeds this tiny. I know this doesn't really reflect on viability, the colors were good / no white / premature seeds, just TINY. The first bean failed to germinate, the second one popped in three days.

Now, in my intro I mentioned one of the things I'd like to chase on AFN - do plants stretch more effectively under HID than LED lighting? Ever since I started growing under LED, I've noticed none of my auto's would stretch. It took awhile, but I think I see the pattern unfolding as I complete more grows. Ennyways, I decided to try the Blackberry Kush in my original 250W HID tent which has been so successful on past grows. True to suspicion, the plant stretched to 15" in fourteen days from transplant to HID. Encouraging. So I switched to HID / HPS Bloom, started LST, and watched the plant progress. I was REALLY excited as it matured. The entire plant's calyxes began to display a beautiful purple hue, better than any blueberry photoperiod I've ever grown. The plant pic is in my avatar, Sexy sexy sexy:

Unfortunately, as the plant matured, the calyx-es opened. I've seen this before in many sativa dominant strains, and sometimes (not always) it's hurt yield. This time, it hurt. A LOT. When harvested and cured, the buds dried way too fast (two days!!!), were see-through wispy, and lost all aroma, never to return even after a month's cure. The high was great, but the taste degraded to remind me of Mexican brick. Final yield, 104g / 3.7oz.
Looking past the disappointment, this plant was the most beautiful I've grown. So I’m hoping someone can show me this was a runt or a poor pheno:

Soooo, after the Blackberry Kush, I decided to try the Cinderella-99 / Jack Herer cross. The genetics for this strain had me drooling; C-99 has been a perennial favorite of mine since forever. I LOVE the trippy, psychedelic head high, right up there with G-13. And Jack Herer? can't get any better than that for relaxation / pain relief. So I was hopeful the C99 influence would keep the Jack influence "off the couch" . This one went under my new Mars Pro Cree-128 LED (325W actual, kill-a-watt verified).
Back to the stretch theory, NONE under the LED. The plant stayed quite compact, and even with some aggressive LST to try to open it up, it never spread out. But yield was good, an even 96g/7oz in 78 days. Smoke quality and taste, all excellent. This one was a winner.
Only other observation, I've never seen a plant with more dense / heavy buds by volume. 7oz cured took up about 4-5oz volume in my cure containers. If only some of this could have gone to the Blackberry Kush. But CJ was a pretty girl -

So since those, I’ve launched into a third strain from Dutch Passion; Blue Auto Mazar. I’ve never seen a more sativa dominant strain, it looks like a perfect little Christmas tree. And even after bending her over and tying her up (lots of gurls like that ;) ), the side branches are short & not growing, nothing is catching up. At 40 days in it’s healthy and pretty as she can be. She’s just not filling out, no stretch or spread.
I’m afraid it’s going to be a very poor yielder as well.
Is this my LED no-stretch theory, or other bad result?

Sooooo, that’s my experience so far with Dutch Passion. I have to decide if my yield problems have been pheno dependent, runts, or are true to the strains of this breeder. Thinking about HID lighting through transition on all my future grows, then LED?
Most of all, keeping an open mind and hoping, so I’ll welcome any info on conflicting results from other growers.

By the way, I don’t do traditional grow threads. It’s been my experience that the most meaningful way to do this is to document a grow while completing it, then publish the results all at once. So if someone wants to see my results, the are all in one place and they don’t have to wade through 20 pages of posts to get the particulars. I’ve got some winners to share, and a couple of losers to scare you away from. I’ll be launching into that after my vacation in mid March. In the meantime, I’ll be looking for all your results.

Later, Boyz ‘n Girls!

Awwww, CRAP. No pic's again. I gotta look at this later:WTF:

Ahh!! Grown some of the only DP auto strains i havent yet!! Only one i have grown from your done list so far is the Cinderella Jack, and i grew mine outdoors in limited light.

I am staggered to hear of immature seeds from Dp!! I have had tremendous germ ratings from DP strains.....I have had 100% germination across a dozen or more DP strains grown, with the exception of a single Cindy Jack seed.

I have a question..how is your light distance using the LEDs? That could potentially be limiting stretch? I know there is lots of guys around here that use LED and grow monster autos. How are temps under the LED's?

Okay so yields and quality....the auto ultimate is a monster of an auto. I have had great bud off outdoor autos, but a few guys have reported fluffy bud. Daiquiri Lime is a great strain, but it seems like you are mostly after Indica dominant effects? The Auto night queen....not huge yields, but the quality is exceptional. I have one growing right now and she is a beauty! Glueberry OG would be a good choice. Large heavy yielders with excellent toke.

Dp's Blueberry - So far i have found the effect of the blueberry top of the list for effect for my 24/7 chronic pain (ruptured discs in upper neck). I mostly grow outside and have had excellent success with the blueberry. Here is a pic of the last one i did.
