Breeding A Few Seeds for Fun
Okay, I would like to begin by stating that I am not a breeder, but I have played with breeding a few times. There is lots of guys that would like to try making a few seeds of their own, and this short quip is for them. This technique will get you a dozen or so seeds on a secondary branch, but the best part is being able to use multiple sources of pollen to make several crosses from a single female plant!
Do you have some male/female regular non feminized seeds available? Instead of simply discarding male plant why not instead selective breed a single branch and give yourself a few seeds to play with! Or perhaps get some free cross seeds from your favorite feminized auto strain! Its fun and easy to make a simple cross, and you dont have to dedicate a whole plant to making seed, in fact you only need to dedicate a single branch, or even only a single bud if you want just a few seeds.
Tools and Supplies:
Small paintbrush (for application of pollen)
Small Ziploc bag (for pollen storage)
Paper Towel (to shield the branches that you don't want pollinated)
Spray bottle (to inactivate pollen)
Masking Tape (to identify and label pollinated branch)
Pen or Marker (for writing on tape, what cross ect)
Step 1 - waiting for fellas
Start 4 to 6 regular non feminized autoflower seeds(this should ensure you have a good solid male and female to work with) Keep a close eye on the preflower signs and be ready for males to show signs first. Wait until pollen sacks are starting to form and watch closely. When some sacks are fairly well formed(but before they open) remove the plant from the grow room and place in front of a window placing the pot on a ceramic plate...once the sacs open, sprinkle the pollen onto a ceramic plate and scrape into a small plastic bag.
Step 2 - prepping the females for some action!
Take the fresh pollen you collected from the male(s). Grab the ladies you want to have seeds, and pull them to an area where the air is still(not in the grow room). Grab some paper tower and dampen a few sheets. This will be a shield from excess pollent dropping onto other branches. This way you will get a nice clean pollination, where only the location you choose will have any seed, the rest of the plant will be Sinsemilla(without seeds).
Step 3 - Prepping the branch
Select the branch you would like some seeds from. Take a piece of tape and mark the branch now, so you don't make any mistakes later. One of the lower branches is a solid choice for pollenation. Cover all surrounding branches that you don't want pollenated with the damp paper towel. Moisture is a killer for pollen. It pretty much immediately makes it inactive. The damp paper towel will act as a barrier for the next step.
Step 4 - Magical beginnings
On the branch you selected for pollination, locate the pistils or early preflower. Take a small paintbrush and creafully dip it into your ziploc with the male pollen and pick some pollen up with the tip of your brush. Gently brush some pollen on the stigmas(pistils). Sit there and wait for the seeds to form...hahaha just joking. Wait for an hour and then grab your spray bottle, and gently mist the locations where you pollenated. Proceed to spray until soaking wet. If you only want a couple of seeds, then only pollenate a bud site. If you want a bunch of seeds, pollinate every bud site on the entire branch.
Step 5 - Multiple crosses
This is a great way to get a handful of seeds(or several dozen if you are doing full branches) from the same female plant. Repeat the process above utilizing pollen from different strains or plants, on different branches to make your own crosses.
Step 6 Cleanup
Okay, so once you are done, the plant is ready to get back in the grow room. Remove the paper towels and discard. Grab your soon to be momma and put her back in the grow room. Your work here is done!!
Selection Process -
This is where breeding can get tricky. Selecting traits and breeding them. There is lots of traits that breeders select for their breeding programs, and there is even more traits that breeders will try to isolate in their strains including smell, taste, potency, type of high, size, bud density, colour resistence to disease and other outdoor qualities that might be beneficial. This is a process that can go on for some duration, and it takes dedication to stabilize certain traits.
A few general breeding tips
-Strong smelling males are often a good choice -rubbing the stem will give a good indication of scent.
-Selecting a male with colour is often a good selection if you are seeking red or purple toke. If the male is coloured, and the female is also coloured, then you have an extremely good chance of the offspring being coloured.
