We got any fly fishers out there ?

I am just breaking into it and I purchased a bottom end combo kit rod, reel, line etc... mainly just to see if I got the coordination to do it and if I do later on i'll upgrade rod and reel.

But I want to buy some leaders and was wondering what a good brand to order is ?

that's the best thing bout flyfishing a $30 rod catches fish just as well as a $300 rod

i started fly fishing over 10 yrs ago and have never used a leader or tippit i use a 6-8 foot piece of 4-8lb fishing line depending on the size of the fish Im after

what weight rod is it? what fish will you be after?

my reel was like 10 bucks rod was 40 bucks but catching a 2lb largemouth on a #12 black gnat that was priceless

I usually dont get tippets, I just use plain old leader material #8lb if I remember correctly (I can find out the brand eventually, it at my cabin). I also tie flies, hell I enjoy that almost as much as fishing; nothing like tying flies on a cold winter day. But as stated above knowing the targeted species will help us help you lol :worm: (we have no fish Icon a worm will have to do hah)

Ps-
My first set up was a kit from a local big box sporting equipment store, and I was hooked ever since.

EDIT: Im not bashing tippets I just find that I some how go through them too quick to justify the expense, because I usually dont think a head and buy them online. My main online tying web site is J Stockyard Fly fishing

My Suggestion...go buy a premade tapered leader...it will help with your casting...and fly turn over....making it easier to get the fly that few extra feet...AND start its swim as soon as it hits the water..(very Important). I always take video of the people I teach to cast..They can see thier mistake on video and try to correct them. Most fly casters THINK they are stoppping the back cast @ 12 o'clock...when in fact its more like 4 oclock. They are shocked to how far back they go on the back cast.. between 9 and 12.....and for the real hard to learn guys... I tie a belt around there waist holding down thier arm just above the elbow. When they get used to the range of movement I remove the belt, and fine tune from there

If you need any more advice...shoot me off a PM

Will be glad to help with flyfishing ,in exchange for all the help with Autos I got from this forum

i love me some fly fishing, my first kit was a daiwa set that i got when i was around 10yrs old. i used that kit up until a few years ago, admittedly i had to make a few repairs to it, i have just recently upgraded my kit to a fancy rod and reel from partridge, regarding the tippet/leader question it really comes down to where you are fishing and what you are fishing for, i have a good brown trout river real close and wheni fish that i use a lighter leader because the fish are wild and not as heavy as farmed fish, i also occasionly fish for salmon but you really need a strong tippet/leader for those beauties. tight lines my friends

In my area they sell tapered leaders at Walmart (8-4lb and 6-2lb). Like a dollar a piece. I would start there until you get the hang of it. Then go for the fancy stuff.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice.

I am mainly going to be looking to catch some rainbows but the place I am headed to they can get to 8-9lbs which is rare but not unheard but mainly in the range of 3lbs and some sea run cutties and Lahontan.

I was looking to use the purchased leaders just to at first only worry about where I put the fly and knots later on.

It gets here Saturday so I am sure there are to be more questions real quick.

:tiphat:

I am so stoked to be getting my new setup today.

I went to the Sportsman's Wharehouse and picked up some flies and a knot tying also been watching many videos on Youtube.

That pretty much how I learned. Youtube is a great place.
