Hey everyone,

Long-time reader, finally registered here today. My brother and I own an industrial hemp seed R&D company in Oregon and have been intrigued by the idea of breeding an ultra high CBD (20:1+ ratio) auto that could be used to legally produce "hemp". We got started in the hemp industry last year after 25 combined years of THC production and grew 3.5 acres of state certified industrial hemp in Oregon's Willamette valley. We used one clone--a 25:1 beauty that averages 12% CBD and 0.48% on trimmed flowers--and tested it early (2 weeks before harvest). Things went well and we have expanded substantially this year (~70 acres + greenhouses for seed production). We already have a large library of very high CBD plants, but there are some really special characteristics about autos that we are interested to explore.

I wanted to get the conversation started about this to figure out how other farmers would use a plant like this. Our goal was to create a line that would be finished flowering at the peak of summer to: (a) protect against cross pollination concerns from sensi growers, (b) have a large crop ready at the peak of summer prices, and (c) turn a regular farm field into a high CBD field of green.

What would you do with an auto that finishes with 10% CBD and 0.3% THC?

Industrial hemp note: If you haven't heard, the 2014 Farm Bill legalized industrial hemp production nationally, with a couple caveats: (1) your state must have an industrial hemp program managed by its department of agriculture, (2) plants must test below 0.3% THC, and ... well, that's it. State laws vary, so check if your state is participating; if they are, why aren't you?

Hi @socioecologist
At first welcome to AFN, it would be nice if you introduce yourself in the intro section of the board and put a link in to this thread.
As a small home breeder i would look for a auto strain with a high cbd ratio. I think your strains are photo period plants if iam right.
The next step i would go is do a cross with a cbd auto and your own strain.
In the first generation f1 you will have some fast flowering plants, test them for cbd select the best male and female and breed them to f2. In the f2 you will have 25% auto plants. Test them and select a male and female from the 25%who got the auto gen. The f3 will be full autoatic.
To make the strain more strain more stabil use a clone from the start plant of your mother use a male from the f3a who got the auto gen and do the hole process again.
You can also breed without a backcross if you got the high cbd rate you are aming for.

I hope it helps you a little bit.
It would be great if you post some pics of you cbd strain and tell the community were the strain got tested.

Happy breeding and have a nice day.

Hi Tobe,

Thanks for the welcome and advice! I'd like to think we've got the plant breeding side of things pretty well figured out, but any help is always appreciated. Here's a picture of our initial test group of ultra high CBD auto flowering plants--population ratios on this one are 18:1 CBD to THC and they finish at about 12% CBD. We'll have yield data by the weekend. This is one of 5 separate high CBD auto lines we've developed for hemp production for the 2017 season--the others are 20:1+. We also have 2 more lines in development that are CBG and CBC predominant (respectively).

Hi my friend
looking real nice your plants, do you want them to produce cbd oil or what is your goal you are aiming for?

I would be interested in this, I know many people interested in a strong cbd plant, I know quite a few who use nothing but would if right thing available that's what my mission is to find what will work. Those plants look nice from what I can see.

Wish I could provide close ups, but these were run through the grinder today for seed collection. Average yield was 45g per plant with nothing but decent organic soil + water in 2.5 gallon containers and natural summer sun outside. We do our best to replicate field conditions when we grow out our test plants, so these would perform much better with more light and nutrients. We were quite happy with the results, as it translates to a little over 2 tons of rough trimmed flower per acre on 1' centers. The returns are a little better than hay or hazelnuts. :)
