New Grower First time grow and need some guidance, please.

Welcome to AFN missoss .
Lots of information on this site just pock around under the sub headings and you'll find everything you need to know . I've grown both photo's and autos outside and have found indirect sun worked best for me or an area were partial sun ,shade arrangement . Larger pots normally mean larger plants if their photo's , autos can be smaller genetically although now adays some are getting as large as photos . As previously stated check around the site for more info and good luck your in for quit an education with lots of help when needed just ask .:toke:

Hi @1939bear,

Thanks for the welcome.

I've been reading as much as I can each day on these forums since late September and it's been thoroughly enjoyable living vicariously through the grows of all the users on AFN.

I guess it's inevitable that I'll make a few mistakes but as long as I keep learning from them, and the great info everyone shares, I'll eventually grow autos that yield some weight.

I do have an area in the yard that does get diffused light, however before about 8/9am and after 5pm the fruit and gum trees on the neighbouring properties block out the sun. I'll keep tinkering with my setup and hopefully get it right soon.

For some reason I started thinking about PH yesterday. I'd read about making sure the water/nutes concoction was 6.5 to get the best out of my plant. However I'd dismissed testing runoff because this is my first grow, I'm still a total amateur, and I couldn't be bothered.

For some random I thought I'd do it yesterday and the result scared the shit out of me. Runoff was 4.6. I started flushing straight away and got the runoff up to 5. I'd neglected to add dolomite to the soil at the start and it's probably stunted my plant. I went and got some dolomite this morning and sprinkled a tablespoon over the top of the soil and water her with PH adjusted water. Runoff was 5.5. I'll do the same thing tomorrow and hopefully the runoff will be closer to 6.5.

The runoff of my seedling was also 4.6 so I added some dolomite to the top of her too and watered thoroughly. Fortunately it's been 37 degrees today and the plants required a lot of water to keep them from getting affected by the heat.

I haven't been making sure there is runoff water from every water either which probably means the salts haven't been running off like the should've.

I'll learn from this. Now that I'm absolutely hooked to growing autos.

I checked the runoff ph again this morning and it was 5.1 on both the seedling and mature plant. I added another tablespoon of dolomite to the top of each pot and watered thoroughly. I've just got to give it time to act as a buffer I think. Nothing happens quickly in the garden so patients is the key.

I think my plant is showing the signs of nutrient deficiency. If the soil ph is as low as I suspect then there is definitely nutrient lockout.

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong and everything looks fine. Haha

just speculation, but I think she will be root bound in that pot.

grab one of those soft sided tubs from Bunnings for $9, the oval shaped ones and drill holes in the side of your pot.

place in the bunnings tub and fill with VERY LOOSE SOIL, use some clay balls etc

drill a few holes half way up (50-100mm up) the bunnings tub for run off and keep the water and nutes up to her.

I had to do this with 2 photos to get them to flower properly, although you might run out of time if your plant is an auto...
