Welcome everyone,

I think I am almost ready to attempt a first proper CFL grow. I know a few might think CFL and proper grow don't go along, but I been here long enough and saw very decent results and heard positive opinions on growing with CFLs.

I would like this thread to be a grow log as well as a place where I can inform myself about issues along the way and I'm sure other growers will get something out of it, too. I like the AFN's community; positivity growth and creativity. A learning curve is to be appreciated. I'm sure you've had enough talking if you're taking the time and effort to read this.

Anyways, the grow will start off in a wardrobe that I've been trying to transform into a little grow box. Pictures will follow. It's a growing area of a bit less than 6 sqf.

Genetics:

Yesterday I dropped 4 seeds in water; Think Different and Auto BlueMazar from Dutch Passion, Cream Caramel from sweet seeds, Pineapple Express from Barney's Farm.

Growing medium:

Peat moss bricks which were hydrated and mixed with some soil from the garden as well as perlite. The guy at the local gardening store said its peat moss but then mentioned how the dry peat moss bricks are made out of coconut, which got me thinking its coco coir and not peat moss. The label on the brick said its unfertilized dry peat moss.
To get an idea about the ph; tap water had a pH of 8.6 so I thought I should lower it. Got it down through adding lemon to 6.9 then watered the soil. The runoff was at 6.7.
I need help here, I cannot find the proper pH I need for such a soil mix like mine. It's mainly peat moss, perlite and some normal soil. Help will be greatly appreciated.

What should the pH for my growing medium be? I've seen how coco coir is considered hydro and requires a lower pH.. I'm confused, help a brotha out!

Lighting:

CFLs: 2 DIY power plug CFL fixtures fixed to a piece of wood. Should take 8-9 bulbs mainly in the range of 42 Watts. Which gives around 340 watts. If all seeds four seeds sprout and seem okay, I will be adding another fixture to get into the 450 Watt area thinking its relatively sufficient for four plants?

Fertilizer:

Right now I have a 19/19/19 fertilizer which I will be using for the early stages; starting third week of veg. Another one I have is a 0/0/50 but I do not think I will be using that one based on the research I made. I will purchase one that's more balanced with low levels of Nitrogen and moderate to high levels of P and K.

Any feedback is highly appreciated, please give advice and ask questions if there's anything missing since it's my first grow log..

Pictures coming up soon :)

Happy growing,

M.

Above shown is the grow area. It's a very DIY and budget grow. Reflective materials are car sunshades. More pictures will follow when the lighting is installed.

Gonna watch this one. Panda wrap is inexpensive and would give your girls better light reflection.

Good choice for the first Gro. There's a lot of potential with the wardrobe.

Best of luck with your project

Go to www.groweredeasy.com for more information on CFL growing. The best on CFL and growing in general

Do you mean grow weed easy.com? If so, was just checking it out earlier. Also, I am not able to get panda wrap, although I might be able to order emergency thermal blanket which is made from Mylar.

Above shown is the grow area after lights have been installed.
Two power strip CFL fixtures, one holding 6 bulbs while the other holds 4. Right now there's a total of 450 actual watts luminating the grow area.

Nice to meet ya McChillah,

Hey I had those mylars sunscreens for my grow area, a while back. They worked great for me, so I used them till they died.

No one said growing had to cost a lot. I put more into my soil, and that, to me, was the key to bigger plants.

Peace my friend

Pleasure's all mine, my friend

Hope 450 watts are sufficient for four plants though..

Current status: all 4 seeds showed roots, the TD and PE had much longer taproots than the BlueMazar and the CreamCaramel..
All seeds were put in their final 3 gal containers..

Now the waiting game begins!
