New Grower First Grow Journal

Day 27

Addressed slight nute burn by flushing coco girls with a 1.0EC solution, down from 1.2. Adjusted lights again. Vigorous growth continues. Looking back, my problems in the beginning were caused by using distilled water ONLY. Very difficult to control, fickle. In tests, the PH still swings wildly no matter which way you mix the nutes. The LEAST swings were when adding Cal/Mag first, adjusting PH, add micro/gro/bloom/root enzyme in that order then adjusting PH again. Results were still unacceptable.

Hello Egg, I had the same problem with distilled water. Any anount of pH up or down made the pH swing wildly. I found if I added the nutes to the water first then pHed the water it was nuch easier. The nutes stabilized the water. This is what the roots look like without soil. Keep up the good work!

McJack,
I'm staying away from distilled except for cleaning my meters. Is that distilled water in the DWC? Another question thats been nagging at me...DWC is Deep Water Culture, I'm familiar, I have a 12 hole unit in the attic. But RDWC? The 'R'...is that refrigerated?

To Hell with it...
THIS is my only hobby (catchin fish is EASY)...Changed light spectrum to HPS from MH. Monitoring temps, but HUNG IT HIGH! Ordering a CO2 controller within the next hour. Got me some restaurants so CO2 is lying about. Still have a regulator from 25 years ago when I had one major harvest. Kinda got busy with having kids 'n all. Kinda funny...DWC from the mid '80s? When I finally decide to drag it outta the attic, I'll take pics! Still viable, rockwool...I have tons. Off to get a controller...

Sounds good !The R is recirculating I think..not just bubbles in the bucket but moves water throughout the bucket from a rez..I think im not a water guy yet..still looking for a cheep chiller to do it right..and use something like the current culture system,

Dammit DAB, as much as I've read in the last three months I figger I should have known that! But EYE have an excuse...POLLACK! Apparantly, DWC is the preferred method of the pros, however, as I run a drip system, it can be converted into a DWC with a six-pack and a drill! AND...I recirculate. So I have the potential to operate my next grow (can't wait) with simple drips and modified drips in a coco base. When the roots get long enough they'll simply seek the rez w/aeration. GenHydro Water Farm...grow bucket modified by drilling bigger holes for drain, layer hydroton & perlite on bottom...the roots will still seek the nutes in the rez. Takes about 4-5 weeks for the roots to get there. Plan for next grow is two Northern Lights, two White Widows. One of each simple drip in coco. One of each in modified drip-to-DWC. Roots are geniuses! They'll find their way to the aerated solution.

After further review:
Not buying a CO2 controller. The science ain't there yet. (kinda like batteries and solar). The CO2 injections are totally objective. When the conditions are optimum, shoot 'em a 'lil dose. But carefully, CO2 raises the humidity exponentially! You'll be wiping down the walls of the tent and setting yer fan on high...IF YA DO TOO MUCH! Just a little squirt when temps are high during the day. An intuitive process which I believe can be honed by becoming ONE WITH THE PLANT. A zen thang. Could this be another weapon in your farmer's arsenal?

Trimmed ALL damaged first growth leaves. Hate to lose 'em as they're photosynthesis powerhouses. But since I'm running 24/0 there is NO stretch. Bushy lil bitches. I gave 'em a lil taste of Brazilian! Just a patch 'o pubes.

I wonder if I'll be so smug in 14 days? Prolly not...
