I'm Gonna quit dickin around now and actually Journal my first grow.

INGREDIENTS:
4x4x7 tent
600W air cooled, fully ducted with both MH and HPS bulbs. Also 600W
Thunder fan with reostat (finally got the timer to work with this) Capable of 420 CFM
5 Gal Smart Pots
Coco Noir (or peat) rinsed the shit out of it then soaked in 6.0 PH distilled water.
GenHydro Water Buckets (part of a Water Farm used as stand alone units, drip style, airlift recirculators with reservoir, 2 Gal pots, 4.5 gal rez) (extras of everything, as its part of 8 unit Water Farm)
Hydroton, washed, boiled, steeped with 2TBSP vinegar, rinsed again, washed again. Never used but they sat in storage for 12 years.
Rapid Rooters
4 manifold air pump (GenHydro)
Truncheon EC meter
digital PH meter
Temp/RH wireless transmitter
GenHydro nutrients trio Micro/Gro/Bloom along with CalMag
Hydroguard root inoculant
4 Jock Horror Auto nuts (Nirvana)

METHOD:
All four seeds started in Rapid Rooters and placed in their final destinations. In the tent with MH at 25% at furthest distance possible above seeds. Unfortunately, no rooting stimulant was used. 2 seeds went into the Smartpots with coco. 2 seeds went into the drip systems with hydroton. Rapid Rooters kept moist with mister using distilled water PH'ed at 6.0 and covered with clear plastic domes. All four seeds sprouted (3 days) on NEW YEARS DAY. 3 were good solid sprouts. 1 MUTANT. All four plants were overfed due the excitability of grower. The two plants in coco were windburned by a drunken gardener. First leaves damaged. The one viable plant in the drip system was damaged by wild swings in PH coupled with overfeeding. I did not have an EC meter at this point.

DSC00034.jpgDSC00019.jpgDSC00017.jpgDSC00018.jpgand the mutantDSC00020.jpgthis was day 15. Increased lights to 50%. 3 feet from canopy.

On day 16 damaged first leaves removed from both Jocks in coco. Flushed with PH'ed distilled water at 6.0. Runoff PH measured at 6.1 The damaged plant in drip/hydroton transplanted into a coco/drip system simillar to Truu's. Also switched to tap water as wild swings in PH had been experienced since day 1. The PH using tap water has proven to be much more stable and manageable. Lights increased to 100% roughly 24" above canopy.

Day 17: Read C.E.'s (easy) Coco guide and What Truu know's about coco, (both versions). Add CFL's to increase growth below canopy.

Day 18: Mixed very light nutrients and added root inoculant. Also used foliar misting with ultra-light nutes twice daily on all plants. Added 1/4 tsp of diametaceous earth to the damaged plant in drip/(now)coco. EC of all nutes around 740. PH 5.9. Runoff PH at 6.

Days 19 and 20. The 2 Jocks in Smartpots showed significant improvement! Jock in drip greened somewhat, but definitely a damaged and stunted plant. I'll maintain this plant to use as an experiment in attempt to mimic what Truu has going on. Fed all plants and EC of 840 with a ton of runoff. 5.9. Temperatures and humidity have been kept at optimum levels to this point.

Day 21: Another feeding at EC 840. All plants. Raised lights to induce stretch. Adjusted fans to maintain temp. Considering the rough start, I'm not unhappy with the progress of the girls. I've compared them with other plants at 21 days, and I'm not outta the ballpark.

Welcome to the club! Trial by fire. It's the only way to learn. Subbed!

Man,
I've just concluded an extensive study on 'foliar feeding'. I resume the foliar feeding (in veg state only) immediately. Not a doubt in my noggin.
Three different sources say pretty much the same thing:

FOLIAR FEEDING
Plants can absorb both water and nutrients through their leaves, so the nutrient-water solution supplied to the roots can be misted on the foliage as well. Leaves have stomata that serve the same purpose as pores: They open and close as needed to regulate the absorption or CO2, water, and nutrients. Foliar-fed plants grow faster. It also saves fertilizer compared to soil; about 95% of the fertilizer is absorbed as compared with betyween 10 - 20% using conventional methods. Foliar feeding is especially helpful when plants are suffering from a deficiency, because the needed nutrients are delivered directly to the plant parts that need it, the leaves.

...just sayin...

Day 22
Drip with Coco
Installed airstone in drip system. Adjusted PH from 6.1 to 5.9. EC in rez 840. Timer on 3 waterings per day @ 1 hour each (My drip trickles) Trimmed one of the damaged 1st leaves halfway between stalk and leaf. Directed CFL into unshaded area. Noticable new growth at first and second nodes. Beautiful new green growth! Applied foliar mist.

Coco in Smartbuckets
Fed with light nutes at 420 EC, ph 5.9. Runoff of both was 700. Ph of both was 6.1 Applied light foliar mist. Raised lights another inch to induce stretching. These girls are very bushy and don't seem to want to stretch. Tons of new growth and I've placed CFL's to light shaded areas. No sign of calyx on any plant except the MUTANT.

Will begin preparing coco tomorrow in anticipation of next grow. With extra buckets and reservoirs, I'll just let 'em run with PH'd water for about a month after initial rinse. Ordered 5 Northern Lights and 3 White Widows. Next grow will be 2 Northern Lights (as these were suggested for new growers).

Thanx to Truu for giving me the motivation to use my GenHydro Waterfarm buckets with coco!!! The next grow is gonna be MUCH easier as I won't deal with the wild swings in PH for the first 14 days!

Day 23:

DSC00036.jpgDSC00037.jpgDSC00038.jpgDSC00039.jpgDay 23:

The first Jock is over 8 inches with explosive growth and looks real good to this point. The second is just above 5 inches but it's undergrowth is THICK! The third jock is an experiment, however I think it will come close to catching up with the others as the drip/recirculate method is going to be amazing and will be my preferred method in the future. The MUTANT continues to provide comic relief!

This mornings feeding:

The two in smartpots/coco received nutes at 5.9ph and an EC of 1.1 (Genhydro trio micro/gro/bloom with Cal/Mag and Hydroguard for roots).
Runoff of both was 6.1ph and .8EC

The drip/coco got 5.9ph with a healthy dose of nutes at 1.3EC and I'm gonna let the drip go 24/7 until the plant tells me otherwise. Just to see what she does, kinda like drip with hydroton.

All four plants are female, showing their stuff this morning. Cleaned and re-arranged tent. Calibrated EVERYTHING. Prepared water for tonites feeding by placing bubbler in 5 gal water bucket. Began reconstituting block of coco, with interesting results! I'll post my observations in the coco forum. Wish me luck!

Lady in drip/coco goes back to 3 feedings a day as she didn't cotton to the 24/7 idea...AT ALL!

I think I spot a bit of heat stress on the 2nd plant?

Otherwise looking good!

Looking Good eggmansky!

BeThere,
Yep, excellent diagnosis! I keep raising the 600W MH. One of the CFL's was misplaced as well. Looking for some stretch out of all of 'em!

your first pic's had me a little worried but it look's like you're on track my man. I'm doing soil grow's myself, but I'm interested in all the technic's of growing so i'll be following this
