:lab: 04/28/13 Trial #2
Ethylene Gas Seed Treatment for Improved Germination and Feminization
It was brought to my attention that treating old seeds with ethylene gas has proven to greatly increase germination rates, up to 90%, and can also result in up to 50% 'feminization' of treated seeds.
In this trial, banana peelings will be used to produce the ethylene gas. I have selected a 50 seed batch of 20+ year old mixed seeds for this trial. Eight additional batches of 50 seeds have been selected for follow-on trials.
Step 1: Close the seeds up inside a brown paper bag.
Step 2: Place the brown paper bag inside a small plastic sandwich bag left open.
Step 3: Place the small plastic bag inside a larger plastic bag.
Step 4: Place a ripened banana peeling inside the larger plastic bag and seal it.
Step 5: Place the trial bag in a warm place (70-80 degrees).
Step 6: Replace the brown paper bag and banana peelings every 2 days for 14 days.
Note: My first two week treatment failed, as I allowed the seeds to turn moldy by not changing the bag every time I changed the banana peelings.
