End of first grow - Bud Rot :(

Noted, thank you.
Having now had a more through inspection of the plant, I can see that only the top 3 (biggest) colas are showing rot symptoms. I have cut these off - looking more closely, it doesn’t seem to be brown through the whole cola, the lower parts of these 3 colas seem okay. For safety should I not risk taking any bud off these colas, or if it looks fine should I go ahead and dry it?

Pics of the 3 chopped colas and of the remaining 6 colas still on the plant
I just wash as I noted above. The amount of H202 is one quart to gallon of water. You can do a search for videos or exact method. I use one cup of Real Lemon (generic brand) to a couple gallons of water. Baking soda probably 1/2 a box to a bucket of water. I pick up all the supplies at Family Dollar in US. Runs a few bucks for everything that way.

Just seen your post Doug, thank you. I will have to look more into that method
I myself and I have noted others here also wash all their bud whether it has powdery mildew, bud rot or not now. Especially with an outdoor grow. I find it not only cleans everything off the bud bud also makes it smoke smoother. I just can't smoke dirty weed myself after I started washing. I also like clean weed for making edibles.

Hydrogen peroxide naturally degrades to water and oxygen by various mechanisms, including chemical reduction and enzymatic (catalase and peroxidase) decomposition by algae, zooplankton, and heterotrophc bacteria.

Doc Buds wash method.

The first time you wash your harvest and see all that brown crap left behind you'll begin to see the light! Then, when you smoke your first washed harvest, you'll understand.

For those who are new to this, here's my method:

4 buckets total. (5 gallon buckets are perfect)

Bucket 1: 3 parts RO water to 1 part 3% H202.
Bucket 2: 5 gallons of RO with 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup Lemon Juice
Buckets 3 and 4: RO only.

Cut down plants, pull off fan leaves by hand, remove any necrotic leaves. Leave sugar leaves and anything with frosting on the plant.

Fully submerge in bucket 1 (H2O2) for 30 seconds. Submerge for a full minute if you had ANY sign of PM or bud rot. Let water drip from buds and then.....

Fully submerge in buckets 2 through 4 for 30 seconds each...lightly agitating the whole time.

Allow produce to drip dry. You can blow a fan on it if you like, just make sure it's blowing clean air.

Hang and dry per usual.

Final manicure of buds is best done after they dry. It goes very fast and you're left with washed, highly resinous trim....makes superb joints. I'm also educating my customers to select untrimmed buds, which are actually better than the manicured ones because they still have sugar leaves attached. The trichomes in the leaves have more THC than those in the buds.....so it's good to get the whole spectrum in there.

It will also give you a smoother smoke. Less coughing. Does not affect the trichomes using cool, not ice cold water. Weed gets rained on so getting your weed washed shouldn't effect the potency.

Thank you for the detail on the method.

I now have the three colas wet trimmed with all of the visible and surrounding bits with bud rot cut out.

I have tap water, lemon, baking soda.

I do not have H202 or access to RO water. I think you need a prescription to get H202 from a chemist here and online lead time is 2 days. Might have to wait but the buds will presumably start drying as of now

In the US we buy a quart bottle of 3% H2O2 around $1.00 in just about any store.

Lemon juice and baking soda alone has been used before also. I don't use RO water either. I have a well.

So I have done the following:

1. Chopped the upper third of the plant, only left colas in the plant that have zero sign of rot. I will harvest these in a couple of days.

2. Cut away all the rotted areas and their stalk (and a bit more to be safer) from the harvested buds. Then a light wet trim.

3.Washed in baking soda and lemon juice with water then washed finally in plain water (we have very good quality tap water here). H202 will have to wait for the other half of the plant .

4.Drip-dried off most of the moisture and have now hung them in a cardboard box in the coolest part of my garage (24c night time...), holes punched on the sides of the box with an oscillating fan blowing at the box for a little air flow. I will be rotating the box so the air doesn’t always seep through the same side

We will see how that turns out. Just want to extend my gratitude to everyone who has helped me salvage something, it’s been a stressy few hours!

You've done alright there man... more than most!.. but major bigups to @Doug58 for all the sound advice... may give it a whirl when I crop!... got me own issues on one of my guerrilla plants... I'm off to the infirmary!.. good luck with the rest of the grow... easy now!...

Thanks Steppa and wishing lots of luck on recovering your own stuff.

My first observation now they’ve been hanging for 2 hours is they’re still very wet and the humidity is 72% and will be increasing through the night. I’ve put 2 little dehumidifier salt boxes in for now.

Obviously I’m scared of more rot but the only option for a 50-55% environment is to put it in the main grow tent, but that means temps of 26-33C this weekend. No easy answer here it seems!

I hang on a thin rope in my basement with a fan blowing across them for about 12 hours to get the surface moisture of of them. Or place in one of those herb drying nets after hanging for a day and then leave them in the net for several days before putting in brown paper bags. I use a small fan the whole time.

I wouldn't worry too much bout the buds you've chopped ya gotta focus on the plants in ya tent!.. stick another fan on top for airflow and try keep the humidity down!.. all the best buddy... hope it works out for ya... easy now...
