New Grower Do all buds expand and get fat? Do some stay as big as the thickness of a finger?

Hello autoflower fellows,

I have seen some plants (one few weeks before finish, one midway through) with rather small (not very thick) flowers / buds.

Could you please tell me:

1. Do all buds start not so thick and they become thicker right before finish?
2. Are there some plants which despite being bush and not-stretched with many flower sites end up with tiny buds?

Example size I'm talking about (although this one is clearly not very mature yet):

By tiny or not very thick I mean buds that have less number of calyxes so they are not fat and chunky.

Hi x The answer to #1 is that, buds will usually continue to stack/thicken throughout the flower period. My buds start to really get hardened and resinous in the last 2-3 weeks of flower. Early flower-especially with sativa strains, imo- the buds are fluffy, hopefully full of pistols, and just doing their thing in the life cycle.
On #2, the right amount of nutrients, good water,and adequate light, are the most significant factors in getting full/lush buds. I reckon there could be a pheno, or even a strain, with a tendency to small buds, but the seed company isn't going to have that strain as a best seller. Small buds, and light/fluffy bud production are much more likely an issue with water/nutes/light, than a strain type.
The pic you shared, looks like a typical 2-3 weeks into flower. That's a common bud growth for that age of plant. I would expect, by week7-8, that that bud will be much bigger, and quite resinous

Interesting question and I'm not sure that I have the right answer .Having said that I currently have 5 White Widows from the same seed provider that are displaying different results . 2 plants have grown to be what I would call average while 3 are smaller with somewhat smaller buds . The 3 smaller plants started out smaller and simply remained that way.
As far as question #1 I would say not all buds will fatten up when it comes near finish time and probably depends on the strain but i could stand corrected on your question and somebody with more experience may come by with a more complete answer :tiphat:

That's been my experience as well (buds will usually continue to stack/thicken throughout the flower period.). Time, patience and a light touch will bring greatness. Just don't love it to death, and indeed, those last couple of weeks are fantastic.
