I am curious as to whether or not its advisable to defoliate auto strains? It makes sense to me to open up bud sites to more light. But, everything I read on Auto's is not to stunt them. Defoliation definately slowed growth on photo's I've grown I do see on here people talking about lolipopping....so is there any evidence either way? Would love to hear the thoughts of some experienced growers....

I personaly defoliate a little, often, it's a bit of a must due to the close proximity i grow my plants, There is also some evidence that it may help to produce higher THC levels, as the plant treats it as a preditorial attack. It seems to have no effect on the size of my plants either, I think you'll find that autos are a lot tougher than some people first thought. Check out my sig, if you want to see some results of defoliating and super-cropping with autos.

Thanks Hazy, I appreiate your response. I also grow my plants in close proximity to each other. Im growing 3 auto pounder and a NL auto. The NL auto is so bushy I almost have to defol it. I've tucked all I can. Dude, I checked out your sig,you have big time skills. If I get something half as good as your grows I would be thrilled. Stop by my grow if you get a chance it's in new growers forum. Thanks again.

as a recent EX-comercial grower ive always found i get higher yeilds with fewer plants , meaning never cram too many in tightly because less will give more if your not over crowding , i know it is very easy to get carried away and plant way too many for a given space , ive been guilty of it many times and it has always = less yeild in the given space

food for thought

peace

I think im guilty of planting too many in a small space as well. I've got 4 in my current wardrobe and 2 of them are NL autos and the other two are automazars and the NL are so damn bushy and with all four going their lower leaves get almost no light. Thankfully the mazars are almost done and then it'll just be the two NL's and they can soak of all the light. I think my next grow with autoblueberry I'm going to just plant two or three. But back to the topic I've defoliated the NL's a little and it hasnt seemed to deter their growth so I think a little here and there is fine but I havent been to aggressive with it.

Hi Nick, I'm growin a NL auto right now to and it really is busy as hell. I have defoliated on a small scale. With the NL I almost had no choice at all.

what doesn't kilyou makes you stronger

evening peeps, with reference to defoliation,i googled something today (cant for the life of me think what it was) and got an article i wasn't looking for as yer do,it was about defoliating auto's in the last couple of weeks as it increased the thc without reducing yield and honestly ,looking at the mankey fan leaves on mine, it doesnt look like theres anything left in most of them anyway. And concerning the space issue ,i have 5 around a week off harvest ( yippee, pulled one today)and three two weeks younger in a 80x80x120 grow tent and it is so crowded i am damaging plants moving them and have got the doors open because i can't squeeze them in and canopy penatration is just a different memory, ive just converted an underground cavity into another grow room to deal with the overspill. anyhow back to defoliation, the stalks on the leaves are a bit thick and attatched to well to pull off gently, so what do you think cut them with razor blade was my first thought, but it worries me about wether to snip tight at the join or leave an inch or a bit of leaf stalk? also as they are nearly there should i bother with a smear of gum or leave the wounds open your thought and opinions would be apreciated ,and hope you dont mind me jacking the thread on this one as it apeared with impecable timing, cheers dudes.

Defoliation is brought up at least once a month. With that said, In my opinion the best thing to do is set up a test; with a control group and test group I would shoot for at least 3 in each 4 would be better thats the only way, you as a grower will find out the answer to this often revisited question...... As far as snipping leaves of I use my trim scissors there nice and sharp, I never dress the wound and I keep the cut within a 1/4 to 1/8 inch...Iv yet to have any problems Knock on wood.......

Hello Totally devoid, This is my first indoor grow and my first auto grow. Didnt want you to think I was in any way an expert. With that being said I can tell you I decided to "lightly" defoliate my plants and I am glad I did. I added light and bud growth to some badly needed spots and I think it will make a difference in my yield. I got the bud growth I was after and if it stunted them in any way, I cant tell. Good luck with your grow...
