New Grower Day 8 and looking GREAT!

Not sure what you mean by canning, but I dried in brown paper grocery bags (Trader Joe's, to be exact) and then popped everything into 1-quart mason jars then burped periodically to make sure the RH was good to go. I had one of my RH meters in one of the jars which really helped a lot. I think I could do it without the RH meter from here on in though - I made sure to really observe what the buds felt/looked/smelled like at each stage of drying & curing. IMHO it's a much simpler process than us newbies believe it to be.
I've heard of some people canning their weed like tomatoes to keep them fresh for long periods of time. I may be wrong tho

GRODOR i think you talking about using mason jars? You gotta dry that stuff out for a good wile before you put it in a jar.. brown bag it...

OH yes I kno it's gotta dry real good before, but I'm talking after its dry canning it to preserve it. Is canning better than vacuum sealing it is my question

Yeah, I think you might be mistaking the curing process for canning, bro. So, my first harvest looks like this now:

That's after they've been trimmed & dried. Then they go into mason jars to let the remaining plant sugars and whatnot metabolize out, otherwise known as "curing". Some people cure for a few weeks, others let their gear go months or even years. All along the way, especially in the beginning you have to really keep an eye out to make sure the right RH is maintained, otherwise you'll end up with moldy or too-dry bud. But it sounds a lot more complicated than it is, I promise. The buds in those jars are about a month and a week in cure, and they are smooth, dank and delicious. :smoking:

Yes that is the nice stuff right there guy. I guess that's the part I'm confused about, I kno it has to dry for a while and I'm hip to the bag method it was after the bag drying that I was questioning I guess.

Thanks man. Kinda hard to see but I even sorted it into "everyday medicine" buds and "having company over" buds, lol.

But yeah. So if you're doing the paper bag drying method, once you chop the plant you'll pull off all the leaves that don't have any frost on em, then you'll do a closer trim and save all that for edibles or hash. Then the buds go in the bottom of paper grocery bags (try to find the thickest you can) in a single layer. Fold up the top of the bag a few times (I held mine closed with clothespins) and stick em somewhere to do their thing. The general rule of thumb that I've seen (and that worked for me) is for every 10 degrees of RH you have in the area you're drying in, add a day to your dry time. You should ideally be aiming for a slower dry than a faster one. My ambient RH was 45-55%, and my buds took right about five days to be ready for curing. Also, the size of the buds will affect this too - try to keep them no larger than a golf ball.

Once they're dry, you move 'em to wide-mouth quart jars. Fill each about 3/4 full, and stick in a RH meter if you have one to spare. Leave it be for 12-24 hours, to let the moisture level stabilize a bit. Then, "burp" the jars by taking the lid off for 30-60 mins at least once a day for the first week. You're aiming for 62-65% RH, and buds that feel "crispy" but not dried out. If the buds feel squishy or you smell anything like ammonia, pull everything out and let them air dry outside of the jars for a little bit - they're too wet to sit in them.

And so on, and so forth. It's not an exact science, but with a RH meter and a little bit of observation, you'll get a hang for what you're looking for pretty quick. At a month out, I'm burping my jars about once a week just for a couple minutes and they're good to go. Hope this helps and wasn't too rambling!
