When you think "Autoflower," is that all you think?

For me autoflower means, that a part of the DNA of that strain is from ruderalis and that this part is responsible for switching from vegetative state to flower state on its own, depending on its age, independently from the light cycle.
A positive side-effect of the development this characteristic, that an autoflowering strain can handle 18+ hours of light but doesnt need to have more than 12 hours of light till harvest.

What about "Super Auto?" Who here all knows what that is or means? Do you guys think (rhetorical question) that should even be coined as a thing?

Well if i take my definition of autoflowering then "super-auto" means that the age where the plant changes automatically from veg to flower is increased for a certain amount.
This doesnt change the fact that the ruderalis-DNA-part is responsible for it and that the plant is switching from vegetative state to flower state on its own, depending on its age, independently from the light cycle.

So the answer to that rhetorical question is ofc yes :D

What about "Semi-Auto"? I see this with several breeders as well. Should you EVER have to flip an autoflower to 12/12? Was just curious how you guys felt about some of the marketing and breeding things that are going on with autoflowering cannabis.

Again if i take my definition then "semi-auto" means that almost nothing changed from normal automatics only that it is recommended to change the light cycle to 12/12 once they started flowering.
Maybe their DNA mix is has been gone through so much incest that the ruderalis part is only used as a "switch" and the rest of the DNA makes the plant act almost like a photo.

My theory i had was that those 2 types of "new" automatics has been found by trying to breed one of these types and the other one was a side-effect which also had nice characteristics and where kept under a different description or maybe for further breeding. I dont know which type came up first and maybe my theory is wrong as fuck haha

Besides of that i like that they are clustering the different types you can grow as accurate as possible and u can decide what type you want to grow.
Also it is nice for breeders if they want to mix special strains to create something new.

Good morning @johnp540 and the rest of you AFN stars!

I can`t wait to get home from the office today to light up a big fat joint with some tasty buds!
The countdown has started, and there is exactly 4 hours and 45 minutes until the week has officially started :smoking:

I got some new, untasted Black Jack that will be tried out today!
What is everyone else smoking today and is there any new strains out there that should be tested out? :smokeout:

I visited Amsterdam this weekend and had a good joint with Gorilla Glue [HASHTAG]#4[/HASHTAG] and Nicole x Nicole hash, and I have to say: That was the tastiest mix I`ve had in years :pass:

Hi @Root
Out here to visit the common folk ? Always nice to see you're smiling face . :bighug:

Good morning 1939bear :bighug:

I stopped by to see the interesting discussion on Autos, semi/super autos, and photos.

Good morning everyone!

Ah, but if it's autoflowering on it's own, what exactly makes it super? "the size and potency of a photoperiod?" Really? I see guys on here growing massive trees with strains just called "autoflower." Are you sure we aren't being fooled by advertising fluff? :hump:  To me it sounds like a way for breeders to distance themselves from the Lowryder [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] stereotype of small plants and low THC.

Again if i take my definition then "semi-auto" means that almost nothing changed from normal automatics only that it is recommended to change the light cycle to 12/12 once they started flowering.

That's the exact opposite of normal automatics by your definition:

For me autoflower means, that a part of the DNA of that strain is from ruderalis and that this part is responsible for switching from vegetative state to flower state on its own, depending on its age, independently from the light cycle.

If you need to push a semi-auto into a difference light cycle to produce flowering, is it really an autoflower? Look at how many journals here over the past several years have had autoflowers that never flowered that were NEVER marketed as semi-auto. Are those breeding companies unknowing pioneers of the auto world? And why? Who is demanding a semi-auto? Who is that niche? What is their reasoning for wanting that?
