While jazz was originating in New Orleans in the 20s and 30s, a different style based on the blues, evolved in Kansas City. Regional big bands toured Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, playing this style. The best of them were Walter Page and his Blue Devils and the Benny Moten Orchestra, with William "Count" Basie on piano. When both bands fell on hard times they merged in 1933 and became the Count Basie Orchestra. Except for a brief period in the 60s the Basie Band still tours to this day. Here's the theme song of the Moten Band, Moten Swing, with Count on the piano.
