It's because there's more geese on one side

How do the Geese choose their flying order?
I have spent many hours on the beach watching pelicans hold glide competitions for the youngsters spots in the off shore hunting lines. Mostly spent in ground effect so glides are most important. The pitchers of pina coladas had nothing to do with it.
