In my 24 yrs up here have seen 4, they don't like company, lynx are even more reclusive, seen 1
Seems to me most animals just want to be left alone, and are more than happy to return the favor.

In 50 years I have only seen one bear in person. And if it weren't for the idiot in the cabin next to me, I'd never have seen it. The family and I had rented a couple of cabins near Stony Man Trail in the Shenandoah park (an absolutely amazing place, by the way). The guy in the cabin next to me though it would be fun to put food out for the bears, despite signs on both sides of both doors strongly advising against it. I guess he was aiming a camera out the window in hopes of getting a picture.

Naturally, a bear found the food. Ate the food. Was still hungry. Ripped the back door off the cabin as the dumbass who put the food out fled through front door. As soon as the bear started going at the door, it woke me up and I went outside to see what was going on. I saw the bear go inside just as the dude took off. Park rangers arrived while the bear was still eating dumbasses food, and they ushered me back into my cabin. I think they just kept an eye on it until it got bored and wandered off back into the woods.

...reminds me of when I was a teenager, and my family decided to hike in the mountains around Sevierville, Near Gatlinburg.
We had just crossed a dried stream bed, and came up a small ridge. We heard something making noise down from us... And me being the stupid kid I was, jumps off the trail, and heads straight for the noise.
20 yards off the trail, I find what was making the noise. A young black bear.
I froze in my tracks, not knowing if I should grab the mace my dad made me carry, or if I should grab the granola bar in my pocket...
So I grab the granola bar, crouch down, hold out the granola bar, and start talking to the bear. He/she sniffed the granola bar, circled me while sniffing me, then came back and grabbed the granola.
My dad and uncle came flying down the hillside just a hootin' and hollerin', and spraying mace everywhere.
That bear sat there watching us like we were stupid for a good minute before running off.
