I'm a new grower/patient and I am attempting an all organic soil grow. I'll spare everyone all the verses of my sad song, expect to say this is my fourth attempt to grow from seed. Everything started out great this time, but now I'm starting to see some yellowing on the first true leaf set and some new growth is curling. She's definitely in pre-flower with lots of white hairs - just over two weeks old. My thought is she might have just been hungry and possible slightly under watered. I have noticed the stems are starting to turn a little red. Anyways, I would really love some input from more experienced growers. Is she okay or are these early signs of some problem? I'll try to post some pics below. Thanks for your help. Peace.

Your Equipment:
1) Type and wattage of lights – Six CFL 23w , warm/red spectrum

2) Distance from tops? 2-3 inches

3) Reflector type? bare bulb installed horizontally (two rows of three bulbs each) inside of tote is flat white paint, outside is painted flat black

4) Is there a consistent fresh air supply? Yes, passive intake

5) Do you have an exhaust fan and a circulation fan? Passive intake and small outtake fan (installed directly above lights)

6) What are the bulb wattages, kelvin ratings, and schedule? Six CFL 23w, warm/red spectrum, 18/6

Your medium:
7) Specific brand and type of soil –Black Gold Natural and Organic Potting Soil amended with ON Insect Frass (2-2-2) and a vermicompost/biochar blend

.8) Size of container – 2 gal smart pot

Your nutrients and water:
9) Source of water – distilled water, PH unkown
10) Method of checking water ph. N/A
11) Method of adjusting water ph. N/A

12) Specific brand and N-P-K ratio for each bottle. Plain water only until last night I top dressed with ½ teaspoon tomato tone and watered with about 3-4 cups of distilled water

13) How often are you watering between feedings, and how much per watering? Watering plain distilled every 2-3 days about 2/3 – 1 cup water until last night gave more water when top dressed with tomato tone

14) Any additives or tea's? no, other than soil amendments added before planting and top dress tomato tone – both described above.

15) Are your ph levels stable, or do they fluctuate? Don’t know

17) Do you foliar feed? If so, with what, how often, and at what time do you spray? N/A

Your growroom:
18) Indoors or outdoors? indoor
19) What size of closet, room or hut? Large plastic tote on end measures approximately 26” X 15” X 14”

20) What are the temps and humidity levels while lights are on? I have min/max thermometer/hygrometer. Max: 86F/62% Min: 65F/34%

21) Have you seen signs of insects in the grow room? no

Your strain:
22) What strain are you growing? Nirvana Blue Mystic Auto Fem

23) Is this an photoperiod strain? No
24) How old is the plant? Just over two weeks
25) In what life-cycle is it? pre-flowering

26) From seeds or clones? seeds

I would say this one is your problem right there. It is really hard to pinpoint what is wrong and what to do when we don't know what pH feed you are giving to what pH soil. I cannot stress the importance of correct pH as it is critical for proper nutrient uptake and overall wellbeing of the rootsystem.

Get a proper pH probe for water and pH probe for soil and some pH up and down drops. If you rather not, then I guess it would be best to go with Advanced Nutrients Sensi -nutes as they are "pH perfect" and hold the proper pH without need for adjustment. Good luck!

I appreciate your comments. Please help me understand something. Nearly everything I've read says it's not necessary to PH when you have an organic soil grow because the soil and microbes buffer the PH for the plant. As for feed, I've given only dry fertilizers not liquid or teas so how would I test dry ferts PH?

What was the N-P-K of the dry ferts you used? If your not using organic feed you'll have issues not ph'ing, You can get away with just black strap molassis and epsom salt feeds 1tsp each to one gallon of water. Another thing is what water source are you using, City water is jacked usually you can let the chlorine gas off but if it's got chloramine in it it wont gas off and that kills all your microbial life.

Oh sorry silly me. I cannot say for sure about purely organic grows since I don't have experience on those. Still by everything I see in the pictures signals that pH is off or there is some overfeeding going on. Leaf tips curling down and yellowing at the top signals nitrogen toxicity as well as overall overload. At the same time though these leaves look somewhat pale.

I think there is some serious problems at the roots / soil. Better I leave it at that and let the organic experts handle this one.

I'm using Black Gold Soil which is organic and pretty much blank with regards to nutrient contectn (.05/0/0). To this I added 2 tbsp. of Organic Nutriet Insect Frass (2-2-2) and 1/3 cup of BioPetra (which is a local blend of biochar and vericompost). Last night I side dressed the plant with 1/2 tsp of Espoma Tomato Tone (this is roughly 1/4 recommended strength). Tomato Tone is 3-4-6. Everything I've used is organic. As I said in my original post I've been using distilled bottled water.

Thanks. The color is way off in some of the pics. I think the plant looks a nice green except for the first true leaf set, which is definitely yellowing. The new growth around the top bud site is more pale green. I read earlier today that nitrogen toxicity can be cause if the soil is under watered. I've been trying to go light on the water this time, but wondering if I've been giving too little. I gave her a much bigger drink last night after I top dressed the soil.
