/H.

Damn, that must have been some kind of fight! I am trying to imagine a fight that would lead to me cutting off the main cola of a plant..........Nope, I can't imagine it!

I've lollipopped autos and photos without any trouble with either.

Remember that plants like cannabis will often put on several branches because they are descendents of plants that might be browsed in their natural environment or be subject to p&d, so naturally the last thing you want to do, if your an annual plant, is to put all your genetic material (seeds) for the future in to one cola and no side branches or you risk losing the lot.

If you take out the main cola the auxins (growth hormones) that were concentrated there will be diverted into the side branches, depending on when you do this you will often find that one of the side branches will develop quicker than the rest and therefore become the replacement cola.
I tend to lollipop late (depending on the variety/species).

An indica I might lollipop at 6/7 weeks a sativa at week 8

Bare in mind that I lollipop because I'm always short of gear! but it can make sense because if you leave the rest of the plant alone you will see a surprising difference in the growth of side branches on a "topped" plant and an "untopped" due to extra availability of light and the surge in auxins that go into the other branches, so you might end up gaining slightly overall as well as experiencing the subtle differences between young and mature dope.
It is a stress on the plant but it is physical rather than environmental and one that the plant has evolved compensation techniques for i.e redirection and increase in auxins to try to still take seeds through to the next year before the winter arrives.

Hope this covers it for you,

Jim

Hi DJ,

Thanks for the explanation, in my last grow the center cola at around week 8 became so large it had to be supported, if this happens again I will try topping and let the rest of the plant continue to grow.
