Breeding forum

This is the same section as the old one that was called "breeders".. it just got renamed when the site was updated. Some sections got combined, some got name changes.. But I can see what we can do about the name of the section. There weren't many people with auto regs a year ago, and even fewer breeders selling them. I think Im still the only one on site with Mephisto auto regs.. But if the demand or need is now there, it should be looked into.

I guess I just miss the old days, seeing what new projects the community was working on before fems dominated the market...not much progress can be made for the cultivar if everyone keeps spraying the same fem seedlines with cs and sts.
It seems the feminized market has created a giant hashtag metoo movement against male autoflowers...a good female is easy to spot. a good male, not so easy.
So its in the best interest of seedbanks to make fems because its pretty much a sure thing to do, take a nice female reverse against another nice female...its pretty much bulletproof in comparison..
Hence why I have so much admiration for regular auto breeders taking the road less travelled.

This is now the section dedicated to "breeding".. Keep in mind that this site is 98% based on and about feminized autoflowers.. That's why it's named the way it is. Most people would be searching for info on how to make feminized autos like the ones they are used to growing. Are you wanting to see a separate breeding section for auto regs? Or is it photo period regs that you'd like to see a forum for?

There are a couple sides to this.

One, there isn't an obvious place for threads about issues that come up growing regular autos, rather than feminized seeds. Night Owl and Wicked Pissah released some earlier this year, Mandalorian has always had them, Mephisto is potentially releasing some next year, other breeders probably will too. I was searching for a while and didn't really see many threads with info about how long reg autos typically take to show sex, for example. This isn't necessarily about breeding at all, but the practical issues that come up when growing regs.

Two, actual breeding, or at least hobby pollen chucking . The focus of "seed feminization" is on making feminized seeds, but info about things like how people decide what to cross, which particular plants might be good breeding candidates, collecting and storing pollen, how many buds or branches to pollinate if you don't need a ton of seeds, how long seeds take to stabilize, pros and cons of all-female breeding, or other questions that are fundamentally about breeding, but not really about feminizing seeds (whether feminized seeds are used or not).

It doesn't seem quite right to shoehorn them into the section about seed feminization, but they also don't really fit anywhere else with the current subforum categories.

Now that I am going down the pollen chucking road I find myself more inclined to look up info on that, so I am looking for more than just the feminized seeds section.

More general would be 'breeding' if we don't necessarily want to get into the different categories.

Honestly I'm happy with whatever, but the industry continues to grow, so does the subject matter around it. This place is great thanks to the people here and the general lack of BS.

See my last post.. Keep in mind, that when the site was updated, there had been no demand for a general breeding forum. We kept what was on demand. Yes, as I stated above, there were a few breeders offering auto regs.. Not many people growing them here on site. And if they were, they were growing for the flowers and not for breeding.. Im a fan of auto regs and have bred many.. I've posted entire journals that were updated weekly, showing my entire breeding process.. Touching on all of the things you mentioned above.. A single journal would have maybe one or two comments from other people on it, max.. Literally no one cared, lol. I think my last one was earlier this year, lol. The demand just wasn't there.. We got rid of the mushroom forum, but people requested it back, so it's back.. This is the 1st mention of the general auto breeding forum being brought back... As I said above, if things have changed and it's being asked for, and people are now wanting a place to post their processes/questions, then it needs to be looked into, and we will definitely do that.

I've Recently grown out some auto regs from some smaller breeders

There easier to sort out males then photos

I absolutely agree with a breeding section. Not smart enough to know how to categorise them though.

In the very beginning, all we really had was reg auto's.....
Feminized seeds had just started to become a thing around the same time autoflowers arrived on the scene.
Even in the early days of AFN I remember mostly regs being grown and a lot of cool projects in the works amongst the community.
Traditional growers hated the idea of fems as much as they hated the idea of autos.
Joint doctor, dutch breed, lowlife, mdanzig and buddha seeds were really the only commercial auto breeders on the market,
then shortly after came short stuff.
Everything else came from the community from guys like zygote, phreedom, krk , mitch, lbh, gearbear myself and too many other names to remember.
We all learned from each other out of necessity...there was zero info on how to breed autos from scratch.
All there was was lowryder and literally a small handful of different autos..
We wanted to breed in more variety and in order to do so we needed each other...
This pre-dates afn...when a small handful of us had to fight and campaign to get an autoflower forum at icmag and EVERYONE cast shade on autos and auto growers...it was dark ages of autoflowers..lol

I think a regular breeding section is needed for all of the reasons @parsing_trees had mentioned and then some...
The only reason there isnt more regular auto varieties is because they're wasn't enough time for regular seeds to spread before fems dominated in numbers and regs fell to the wayside...look at how many reg photos are still available regardless of the advent of fems..
regular autos never stood a chance...because they never really got one....IMO.

I have been looking for somewhere to plant my small breeding flag, both auto and reg. I never even thought to use the Seed Feminization section sub.

And yes small breeding, not pollen chucking.

Whats good fellas? I just joined AFN in hopes of having some cool discussions about breeding. I recently started a project myself. Crossing Critical Mass (photo) into a few auto strains. My goal is to breed autos that will be suitable for a SOG style grow after one or two toppings. @DIRT that sounds epic and my hats off to you...it def took some foresight to believe in autos that much back in the day and their potential is clear now due to those efforts you mentioned!
