I am looking to get into doing a little seed producing for myself, so as to eliminate the recurring costs and risks associated with mail order seed banks.

I think I have the science of it worked out, spray with STS at weeks 3, 4, and maybe 5 and let it grow nanners, start it 3-4 weeks before the mothers, etc.

My question is, what is the etiquette in regard of selfing or crossing other breeders strains? Is asking permission required, or at least considered polite? Or is it more, I bought the seeds, they're mine to do with as I please?

Thanks in advance for any replies, esp from experienced breeders.

I don't look at it like stealing movies unless your starting your own seed bank and profiting from it then I would ask. I make a lot of seeds but I have kept ordering new seeds because I don't like to grow the same stuff over and over. I supply a lot of people with seeds. These people would not order them on there own anyways so I again don't feel bad "There too paranoid to order seeds through the mail so I do it :) ". I don't charge for seeds though I have a network set up with people who will traid me seeds for clones or nutes, pots, other supplies some times but most of the time I am just giving them away because I will never grow 500 of the same strain. I believe the plant is suppose to be shared as much as possible. Find other growers and set up your network. Not on here but people you know. If you take some ones strain and selectively breed it for years it is not the same strain you started with, it is something different and your own. There might be a few that disagree with me on this but its how I feel about it and I think most feel about it.

That's about what I figured. While I have your ear, if you are experienced at breeding seeds, do you use STS? If so, about how many treatments, starting at what age?

I have not made fem autos yet because I am working on a few strains as of now and have a lot of work to do before they are worth fem. I have made regular strains fem though and I used a chemical called Tiresias Mist which is pretty much colloidal silver. I sprayed every leaf and the stem of one branch twice a day, once before I went to work and once before I went to bed starting 1 week before I induced flowering and about 1 week after I switched the lights to 12/12. I was worried because it recommended 2 weeks in to flowering but I ran out of chemical and it worked perfect. I actually did 2 branches and they looked completely male. If I was doing an autoflower I would wait tell it showed sex at about day 21 to make sure your not wasting it on a male and just spray 2 times a day tell it turns. I pollinated a different plant as I was afraid of causing a genetic defect but hear people have great success with selfing plants. Why self a plant though when you could have a strain all your own. As sad as it is though you need to pollinate your best plants. If you want to smoke a plant more than the others than this is the one you need to be pollinating or its not worth your work. I have just gave seeds away to whole strains I did not think turned out as I planned. I gave away a cross of girl scout cookies crossed with chocolate chunk away like 2 months ago. Every single seed I made of it 250 in total after like 5 months worth of work because it was not as good as either parent. This is how you have to be with your breeding or you can end up growing sub par seeds down the road.

Good tips man, I can def see some big differences in the plants im growing now, one in particular id absolutely not want to use any seeds or pollen from, so I can see what you mean about picking the best parents. I'm just getting started, with autos and with breeding - I'm just a hobbyist, I guess - but I do have a vision to breed my own strain. I heard about 'hybrid vigor' and figured at the worst, I get some great seeds for me and a few close friends. Thx!

Ya I am just a hobby grower my self. I don't even smoke hahaha... I like to just grow one or two plants at a time usually for my wife. About 2-3 ounce usually per plant or seeds but I have been growing for over 5 years now and have not stopped sense I started.
