Sawney Bean Grow Shows 2023 Bob's first go at a SOG - Sawney's SOS grown in BioTabs

Sawney Bean Grow Shows 2023
Springtails eh? I had them in one pot and not the other recently. No issues from the pot that did have them. Interesting side by side and that they didn't transfer.

I did accidentally find that my UV light killed them off when I had them before.

That said, excited for your new grow with some top notch seed.
I've had them last grow as well. They don't seem to harm the adult plants, but seedlings are very sensitive when it comes to their root(s). For some reason the balance in the soil was messed up and they got the better hand... I didn't want to throw the soil away, but rather have been reading up on them pesky little buggers and seems there are some predatory species that can be used against them and other pests...So when spring comes I'll be ordering me some and add it to the bin with the soil. I still feel this soil and all it's inhabitants are to good to throw away. The organic footprint is just to big to be wasted...

Hope the deep clean does the job Bob, you've got some interesting things on the horizon
I hope so as well brother. The tent is clean as is the lung room...So let's keep our fingers crossed. Just to be sure, you've just pushed me over the line and I'll be going over everything one last time tonight after work.
I'm also buying all new soil, perlite, ... and will be prepping it with the BioTabs nutrient line. If I can get my hands on some dry worm castings they will be added to the mix as well. I'm also gonna add me some form of slow release Calcium as I feel, and @St. Tom can collaborate, that I'm always running out of it when flower starts...

Happy to see a farm friend took care of you. Would love to see a good SOG, don't see them very often these days.
Yeah...It was quite the trip, but I finally managed to get my hands on some of your crew's genetics.
The SOG though will be grown out of @Sawney_bean 's SOS, aka Spawn of Sawney, aka Son of Sawney. He's one of AFN's locals and is a spot on guy
Because of my previous fumbling, I already wasted 40+ of his seeds, so I truly hope I can finally do his work some justice and show of one hell of a SOG. You're also more then welcome, of course, to join the show. :pass:

Hey guys/gals :toke:

Went to the store and bought several bags of quality soil, perlite and three bricks of coco, as well as a 70L plastic trashbin.
The coco is momentarily soaking in the clean bin with 30L hot water, one cup of Magnesium Sulfate and one cup of Calcium Nitrate.

Later tonight I'll put an airtube into the bin to slowly drain it during the night. If you leave the mix alone it will separate as the coco will start to float on top of the water. Tomorrow morning I'll refill the bin with water and repeat the previous process later on that evening.
I've also ordered 500gr of compost worms, which will arrive by the end of the week. These come packed with 5L of compost start mix, so I don't even have to hunt around for worm compost anymore :woohoo1:

Anyhow...small update, but you guys only deserve the best

Regards,

Bob :toke:

Another small update...for ya'll :shooty:
Thought I was only going to drain the water from the bin a second time, but this morning the doorbell rang and the postman handed me my worms. So I went to work and spread my tarp out in the living room....nah, took it outside. Wouldn't dare risk the wrath of my missus :naughtystep:
I dumped the contents of all the bags on top of it and started mixing with a shovel. Onto the pile went the following:

  • 50L Good quality soil
  • 30L Washed and primed coco
  • 10L Perlite
  • 400gr. Startrex
  • 400gr. Silicium Flash
  • 50gr. of diatomaceous earth
  • 20gr. prepared mix with micro nutrients
And then I ran into a problem...My bin is only 70L in volume and I have about 90L of mix on my tarp...Mhmm....Filled the bucket and topdressed my Figtree with the rest of it...Then took the bin inside, because we wouldn't want a repeat of last time :haha:
Once inside I took my 5L of compost with the worms and dumped it on top of the mix and covered it with the lid.

So yeah, I'm completely happy with how this soilmix turned out. It smells beautiful and the surface is littered with holes, which means the worms are doing their job. To be sure though, I'm going to sow the sprouts in a smaller version of last years pouches and in store bought Lightmix (seedling mix with perlite added to it). I want this grow to go perfect and I'm taking no chances.:hump:

Anyhoo...The only thing I have to do before I go to bed, is somehow fertigate 10L water with 10gr. Bactrex added to that, but I already know that's to much water as the coco was already on the wet side which made the soil perfect as is. Now, I was pulled back in adding the Bactrex in dry form to the soilmix. You should always mix it with dechlorinated tapwater first so the bacterial will activate properly. :wiz:
So I'm adding the 10gr. of Bactrex to 3L of water and will water that in with the airhose so I have a really slow flow which gives me enough time to divide it even.

So my friends...Goodnight and goodbye :toke:
I'm going to let the soil sit and brew inside the bin in my study where I can keep the soil at a nice temperature.

Regards,

Bob :toke:

have used Grow Dots with sucess - were to purchase grow tabs ? did I read walMart ? ( iwthout reading again)
It's hard to get in the states. You can get it in the US from eBay or Amazon if you're okay with paying a ridiculous shipping fee. As far as I know they don't have a US distributor yet. Keeping my eyes out for that to change!

Dude I get springtails in nearly every grow somehow, prolly coz I'm too lazy to clean my tent hehe...but I found DE works, apparently it's like glass shards to them....I just cut the end off a pipette, load it in and puff it all over the surface of the Coco...that seems to keep them at bay.

You are completely right brother. When it will be available in de US is unknown for the moment, but my contact at BioTabs says they are working hard to get USDA approval for import...

Ok, didn't want to bother you guys again with pictures of seeds inside a cotton pad...But I did want to let you all know that I did start them out again.
  1. Sanitize a plate with some H2O2.
  2. Four cotton pads with each 4ml water and two drops H2O2.
  3. Five seeds per cotton pad.
  4. Another cotton pad on top of each previous one, with the same solution.
  5. Microwave foil over the plate and in the closet it goes.
In two days I'll be adding a drop of GA3 (2ppm) solution onto each seed to give it a kick in the butt.
Next day, each sprout will be sown into small (9x13cm ~ 200ml / 3.54x5.11" ~ 6.76fl oz) pouches, filled with some clean, store bought, seedling mix.

All the best this round mate :pighug:
