Grow Mediums Blumat XL Automatic WAtering for House Plants

Cheers grim - that's the "high tech" blumat tromf (or something like that) - i've seen great results from it but looks more involved that their very basic XL for houseplants.

I liked the idea of being able to keep some tubs of water on the tent floor and passively feed the plants through wicking- but i've got a suspicion that the basic version wont be good enough and the more advance version is an alternative for a powered drip system.

I basically need more space lol and more easy acces.

They're so cheap i may give them a go at some point for holiday watering - but for now it looks like i'm going to have to carry on "enjoying" my hand watering lol. I've had a couple of other ideas to make my life easier.

Again, many thanks for the inputs - you've all helped sway me back to sensible :D

Oh i didnt relasise that Blue, sorry my bad. It just clicked with me when i read the title that somone on PPN was using that brand. I hope you enjoy your hand watering.

hi blue,

i am using the blumat system but have a different version of them..

i think the ones you are looking at are the ones with capilaire system and mine need a little pressure cause they are drippers..

i do also have the ones you are looking for but never used them so far as i like the pressurised ones very much...

i do think they work great but when you start with em they do need a little attention.. its mostly feeling the weight of the pots and adjust slightly till you are satisfied with the moisture level .. after that all you have to do is keep the res filled ;)

also when you start its best to mount the top cap under water to ensure there are no air-bubbles inside as this can cause the membrane not to work properly..

if you do deceide to use them and need some advise or help you can allways pm me and ill try my best to help

greets sin

o yeah one more thing id like to add .. if you still have a choice i would use the drip system cause as far as i know if you have bigger pots you might need more then one of the capilaire ones cause they tend to just moisture the soil in the surrounding of where the blumat is at, cause the soil pulls the water through the ceramic part meaning only the part around the blumat is waterred and rest stays dry so you wont use the entire pot for roots!) .. with the drip system you can use up to 4 drippers for one blumat giving you up to 4 spots in the soil where its watered which gives better results

I use to think hand watering was the thing to do. Then, i bought Auto pots! And after the first grow with them, I'm converting completely to auto pots! Its a simple and effective way to automate watering.. With the standard 12 gallon ( 45L )reservoir, I grew three, LARGE plants in the 3.9 gallon( 18L ) pots and 10 gallons lasted 6-7 days.

And a constant water supply appears to be a good thing for the plants. No real drying out cycle, at least with soil, but even coco doesn't get to dry much before the next water/solution cycle.

I suspect the Blumat with the right container could easily give you a week or more between waterings. I'd think having water stand longer than that would lose oxygen and possibly breed detrimental bacteria. I monitor my reservoir for the auto pots to learn how much water X number of plants will use in a week and use just enough to last a week.

For me I feel like I'm having a hard time getting my watering cycle right. On top of thinking that I may be over watering I suspect I may be over feeding them at times too. Trying to automate things is an attempt to remove the "human error" part of the equation for me.

I agree that there is a connection with the plant of sorts when doing the hand watering, but if I keep having problems that I believe are stunting my results that's not good either. So my plan is to pick up some Kind Soil as a test for using a super soil type setup for the nutrients, and then these for the watering. Hopefully taking the watering/feeding out of my hands will smooth things out and I'll start seeing even better results. If I like the system then maybe I'll look into cooking my own soils to give me the more "hands on" connection to the process missing from the watering. :smoking:

Was looking at some accessory stuff for Blumat's today, and came across this video. I think this may be closer to the style that @blue was originally asking about than the ones I'm using are. Seems like a good review vid. As a plus, he doesn't go into it much but he did let drop once that he's growing Autoflowers

Hey Blue! did you get these? how did they work out for you? I picked up a Claber Oasis system on ebay to test as an add on for my bottom watered DIY plants. The res they have isn't enough for more than about 4-5 day when the plans are large. The Claber should give me an extra 3-4 days.

Hey pops - nah, i didn't bother in the end, seemed like too much of a faff and too much uncertaintly!

I'm probably going to go for a 2 pot Autopot system with the passive bottom feeding and 20 litre rez.
Hopeing that should keep 2 plants a live and allow for once a week visits!

I've seen quite a bit of success with them .... and think you use them right?? :D
