we used to have guinea hens at my place those have to be some of the ugliest, loudest birds around! so glad a great horned owl ate the things!
emu can get big enough to be dangerous thou right? nasty kicks and all... thats an interesting guard animal long as they aren't eating that yummy looking cheese!
Yeah we've had Guinea Fowl as well. Over 30 at one time. I love em', but my brother hates the noise and asked me to get rid of them.
The Emu will max out at about 6 feet tall and somewhere between 120-200 pounds depending on sex. I have been working with this little one for the last two months. He is very friendly and follows me wherever I go. Good thing too, cause if he wanted to get away I could never catch him. Full grown he will be able to maintain speeds of up to 45 mph. These are such amazing birds, and super intelligent, more like a dog than a bird. They do a good job keeping coyotes away from the mini pigs. The one in the picture has bonded with Polly, a miniature potbelly pig. They are always together.
At night the emu and polly go inside where I am keeping the plants. The emu is just tall enough to reach the bottom of the plants. He is doing a great job at trimming the bottoms.
Emu meat was quite the rage 10 years or so ago but it never caught on. I knew some people that were going to raise them for market and they ended up taking a beating.
I'm down to 6 guineas right now. I raised my 3rd batch last fall and within 2 days of letting them out my older ones ran them off. Really pissed me off as I had 2 months and about $200 invested in them. To me they are worth putting up with the noise for their tick eating ability.
Guineas form little gangs and can really beat up on other animals. I hatched out 8 last year and raised them up to be very nice birds. Lavenders. They loved my Royal Palm Turkey. They would follow that tom all over the yard, and mimic his every move. It was amazing to watch. Another neat thing about mine was that they would allow you to pet them, and would follow you where ever you went. But alas, my lil' bro insisted we get rid of them......
Since the small little cheese was mowed over by a Nubian I decided to play with it a little bit.
It has been maturing very quickly and is starting to produce beautiful buds, but only on one side. The goat completely ate one half of the plant. So I have turned the plant on its side.
The leaves and buds have started growing vertically towards the light. They are all getting much more light than before.

Hey Bandit, that is what I did with the photo I am just finishing up with. When I transplanted it to a bigger container, I laid it on its side and then pulled branches down & out as they grew. This made for a fairly easy lst, the added plus was I was able to keep the height low and had lots of buds.
