....I was lazy when I was growing that crop and didn’t protect the roots but the green algae ended up growing a nice layer of natural protection anyways. Lol! The algae didn’t affect the plants one bit and the grow turned out very nice, I would post pics of the crop above but I know this is not the place for that.
When I usually grow hydroponically with exposed roots in the tray I always cover them up with a layer of Panda Film to protect them from the light.

In the system they go. Let's see how long it takes the roots to reach the rez. Set nutrient level about 1 1/2" below the net pots. Bubbles from the 8 2" airstones should keep rockwool moist so I don't have to top feed.
