I see some good suggestions and some issues arising from each 1 of them.
I will not comment anymore on this thread, cos I forsee too many emotions/povs, that may be acted on. At the end of the day (sorry for the cliche`), the op must decide on his own, whatever action is appropiate/needed t`be taken. Each suggestion/piece of advice is only relevant to those giving it, cos each one of us deals with `shit` in our own way! I wrote an initial reply (based on my own `past thought process`:ama

That's a raw deal brother; but if I can toss in my two cents on the matter (and what I would do if I were in your shoes,) let's assess your situation:
You thought you found a place to grow that was stealthy. You already suspected someone growing in the area you wanted to grow in. Red flag #1.
You planted your pots anyways. You planted them in the ground IN their pots. All while suspecting someone else growing in this same area. Red flag #2.
You leave for an hour and come back to the same place you just were. That's not being very stealthy. If I saw you driving down "no one travels this way" lane once today and saw you driving BACK there again, I would be a little suspicious. And you find out someone has just been rooting around where you LITERALLY were just standing. Red flag #3.
I would be less pissed off about losing your plants and maybe be a little more worried that someone might have been WATCHING YOU. Holy crap bro. Know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to run.
You have no idea who could be taking your plants and your suspicion isn't going to hold up for shit if you're wrong (and assume all you want, assuming is still different than knowing in my opinion.)
Smoke a doober, calm down, and rethink your battle strategy on stealth/guerilla growing. You clearly picked out the wrong spot that someone else has claim to and now someone knows you're also in the area. If it were ME, I would be less pissed about my plants and more worried someone saw my face and what I was doing.
Be smart. Bruised knuckles won't solve what some planning and oversight could have avoided in the first place.
Just my two cents buddy, it's a raw deal no matter which way you spin it and regardless of what happens, wish you the best of luck getting your grow back to good!

I've liked just about every suggestion on this thread because, in one way or another, they all seem like the right thing to do. I just ABSOLUTELY HATE to see one person taking from another, especially when the one being taken from has worked so hard to get whatever it is that has been taken. Filthy little bitches who take from others make me wanna be that "wildin' out" person that I was back in the day, but sometimes you just gotta let things go. Kinda depends on ur personality. Some people can cut their losses and just move on and some people will just have to to something about it just to kind of feel at peace with themselves again and thats how i am lol.
Just remember though if u decide to talk to him or confront him even if ur polite he will now know that you know about alllll his plants so he is either gonna want to compensate you so you dont ruin his crop or he will want to hurt you so you dont ruin his crop so if u decide to meet him face to face be ready for whatever bro
