Advertised strain smell?

I don’t get the smell thing either, except I smelled a bag of something from a dispensary that literally smelled like Lemon Pledge furniture cleaner. I was blown away.
I always tended to shy away from street smoke that had some crazy ass different smell. I imagine since that was from a dispensary it would be ok. But when I was a teen back in the 70's (cough cough), there was smoke going around sprayed with embalming fluid, that was couch lock like you never seen. I was like, hell no. Probably the only good decision I made that decade.

Many folks report that Purple Lemonade by Fastbuds smells of lemon pledge. I stunted mine growing it, so I couldn't really smell it when growing, but during the cure and smoke, I got a distinct lemon aroma and flavor.

If it's grown really well, you can definitely distinguish certain terps. Mephisto cosmic queen had an amazing old school candy smell which drove me nuts. It all depends on how it's grown tbh.

I get what you are saying about the smells. I’ve learned that there’s a lot of difference from what the plant smells like vs what I smell after rubbing a stem vs accidentally brushing past a bud. I’m a flavor chaser with the vape. When I grind up the bud, I can’t not take a big whiff of the grinder.

Right now, I have orange biscuits drying. That’s easily the worst smelling plant thus far. Smell ranging from skunk to body odor. The resin, on the other hand, is another story. It’s orangy orange orange with a splash of gasoline over a nice base of dank weed.

My advice is pretty simple: This is an endeavor that is very worth doing. If you want develop the sense of smell to detect what the breeders can you’re going to have to grow and vape/smoke LOTS of weed. It’s a hill worth climbing for sure.

I think all of the plants smell amazing in different ways. Though I think if someone is expecting a watermelon zkittlez ( i keep using zkittlez as an example) to smell exactly like pungent jolly ranchers or something, they may be a little disappointed. So a lot of it is about expectations, and marketing.

I can see how running a light too close, too long, too hot, tent climate, etc etc could definitely burn off a lot of terpenes though. YMMV.

I also like taking a whiff of my stock. Impossible not to. And I do catch the smells more after the cures. I no longer grind my stuff I vape. I just break of a little nugget and stick it in my Arizer tube. I find I get even better flavor that way.

I smell sweet, sour, candy, grape, citrus, strawberry, skunk, pine, gas and funk from various strains and I think just tasting it, being concious of taste and attempting to idenitfy smells and tastes make you better at identifying smell and taste. It's a muscle you have to get in shape that you normally don't use lol

Speaking of muscle, I finally tried some of the Orange Sherbet that my friends have been raving about. I gotta tell you, it tastes damn good. It actually has like a "fizzy" orange back end to it. I don't know how to explain that "fizzy" part, but it was freaking me out. I've grown a lot of FB and I've given them their fair share of shit, but I do have to say that they do the "flavors" well. Whether or not they are actually a breeder, or a white label distributor, they make some good selections on what they offer. I've got some of their Pineapple Express, and cream cookies that I need to grow eventually.

that raises my hopes

Yeah I was actually blown away by it. By "fizzy" I mean it had an actual sherbet fizz to it. If you've ever had sherbet powder then you know where I'm coming from. And a malty, orange flavor. Really wacky. As I mentioned, I do not think they are actual breeders. But they make their strain selections, or requests, really well.
