Occasionally I have to raise my nutrient solution pH with potassium hydroxide (pH Up Easy by Vitalink). Even if I dilute it first in tap water, it briefly creates a whitish cloud in the tank when added. Is this normal? I'm worried it is making some of the nutrient precipitate out of solution. Nothing bad ever seems to happen so maybe this is nothing to worry about? Thanks for your help!!

It's probably a localized precipitation that quickly dissipates.
Even if there is root injury, roots are like leaves, and quickly regrow. Some people prune roots.

Thanks for replying to my post and I'm sure you're right that it is only local precipitation. Happy growing!

Nice to meet you too mate & thanks for replying to my question - that's what is so great about AFN, I'm really glad I joined the community. I was just reading your SANlight test - great journal and I love hearing about new LED kit. I used to grow with HPS/CMH but now am a 100% convert to LED (I use Grow Northern Telos 008). Those Q6W look the business. Happy growing!

Sweet. I'm gradually getting the hang of things! Thanks for your help mate.

Adding a significant amount of pH up or down can cause root damage, burning the fine root hairs and setting the plants back while they recover. I use a 3 gallon bucket with a piece of 1/8" vacuum hose attached through the side near the bottom. I put a gallon or so of RO into the bucket, add my pH adjuster, mix, and let it lowly drip into my system. It generally takes about 30 minutes for the whole gallon to drip into the system. Since I'm running RDWC, the constant circulation allows the pH adjusting solution to be gently circulated and doesn't subject the plants to being shocked by a sudden pH change.
