I'm sure this has been discussed over and over again. My heart and instinct tells me that when it is time to flower, even with an auto, the lighting schedule must be changed. I would like facts. Like I said, a plant is a plant is a plant. Will switching to 12/12 when she is ready really diminish my yield?

TOPIC.

Of course it will.
The instincts can easily fool you, use reason instead:tiphat:

Will using 50-100% less time being under lighting decrease your yield? absolutely. The real argument is that 18-24 hours range. Is 24 good? Do plants NEED rest?

I don't have any science to back it up but I seem to notice the most growth in the mornings after my lights have been off for awhile. I run 20/04.

I like that question better. Do plants NEED rest? My assumption is that a dark period lets our ladies find their feet. This is the time for root growth. They like to reach their hands up when the light is nice and strong. Stretching, stretching, stretching. Follow this by a dark period. Every living thing needs sleep at some point or another. amiright?

@Balarama what does reason tell you?

Reason usually takes into consideration facts from different reliable sources and connects them into a kind of explanation of how things work:)

Autoflowering varieties are bred to be flowered under 24h or shorter photoperiods so at this point less light hours equal less photons which mean less yield and probably longer flowering time, less dense buds and lower resin and cannabinoids+terpene production.

haha. I'm gathering my resources right now.

"The new auto-flowering feminized seeds are also a major breakthrough. A grower who plants these seeds can harvest a mature plant that is a meter (40 inches) tall and weighs in around 100 grams (just under a quarter pound). The plants take 70-80 days from germination to harvest. The best part is that you can give them 24 hours of light a day or plant them to flower in mid June. They do not need 12 hours of darkness to flower!" quoted from Jorge Cervantes

Very reliable but I'm not sure this exactly answers the question. Obviously an Auto will flower on its own no matter the light cycle. 100 grams, sheesh, can't really argue with that either. Are these 24/0 plants just as strong, in medicinal value and literal terms, as plants grown with a set cycle. I'm here for quality, not quantity. Money is not a motive. I want the best!

Ruderalis evolved in a climate with short days. Its crossed with plants mostly from subtropical and temperate climates. Auto are not bred to grow in 24 hours of light, they are bred to flower without 12/12. What little data there is about plants needing rest cycles are all inconclusive. I personally feel a 24/0 schedule is a waste of electricity. I find 16/8 or 18/6 to be optimal for my needs. many follow a 20/4 cycle.
Use whatever works for you, auto just don't care! LOL! :Sharing One:

I run 24/0. My temps stay constant and in the winter here (it sucks) I also run a humidifier. Light, temps, and humidity are only part of the grow.
Keep reading and good luck. All the free information here, it sometimes feels like your stealing. So I steal away and give back where ever I can.

Hey pop22, I feel the urge to correct you on the ruderalis;)
The further from the equator you go, the longer days are in summer(when plants grow), over the polar cycle there's 24h sun in summers, when ruderalis flowers outdoors.
The growing season is shorter and daily shortening of daylight(after summer solstice) is more dramatic than near to eq.

I once had some trouble with a finnish early outdoor variety, here it flowered straight away in june because in finland there are way longer days than here.
