I have a 12v 0.5A PC fan and the only 12v adapter I could find around the house is from an external hard drive, it says 12v 1.5A on it.

Can I safely run the fan with the adapter or is it a risk due to higher amps?

Thanks, I wasn't sure...... so the actual risk would be when running a PC fan on an adapter with BOTH higher voltage and Amps, right?

as longs as volts are same for power supply 12 volts and fan 12 volts. do not want to have higher volts.
where amps comes in is your 1.5 amp 12 volt supply can safely run 3 12 volt fans that are .5 amps (hence .5+.5+.5=1.5 amps) your supply 1.5amps.
I have a select/adjustable volt power supply from 1.5-12volts at .3 amps and @7.5volts it will power a 12volt .8amp 6inch oscillating fan barely. click volts to 9 and fan runs like it should, no difference noticed when switched to 12volts. it will power a single .8amp fan but not 2, even though the supply is .3 amps.
