Hi I am new to this forum. And thank you in advance for your time patience and knowledge.
I am thinking about buying the current culture h2o solo.
I have the super closet SuperSonics 8 hole tubs and not to thrilled. I have grown 2 batches of autos in them and they are just not good for more than 1 plant (for me).
Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated 👍

@Krazyhorse :welcome:Welcome to AFN:welcome:. I am a hydro guy. I have grown in many styles of hydro The system you are running now looks like it would be good for starting plants to be moved to bigger reservoirs. The Current Culture products are good but a bit pricey for me. You can do the same with black 5 gallon buckets unless you plan to move to a recirculating system later.

Any time you want to share a reservoir with two plants you will have a tangled root mass that is problematic if they don't finish at the same time. I ran 17 gal tubs for a while. Nutrients gets a bit expensive at that level but the plants were amazing.

I have a thread about Bubbleponics here:

Tag me with any queastions.

The SuperPonics XL8 is, realistically, 6.9 gallons* A lot of hydro is done in 5 gallons buckets so maybe you can just use it that way.

[time passes]

That's flippin' amazing…

I bought a SuperPonics xl12 in one of their tents 6 years ago. And you can see from the picture that I grow a total of…1 plant (MoG, you'll recognize the light).

Like MoG says, lots of plants in one big res means you have to untangle the roots, and, after two years of growing, I've reduced the number of plants to just one at a time. And I have zero problems with that but, you know, I keep my eye out for other things and it was just a few weeks ago that I started thinking about a different way to grow "just one plant".

And I took a long hard look at the Solo.

I might switch to a 13 gallon Solo, so I think it's a good product, but I don't know that you'd be getting all that much out of switching to the 8 gallon model. That would be a little bigger but it's still is just one plant at a time. The Solo has a larger net pot 5" whereas the ones in the XL8 are only 3". My grows has bent the net pots pretty seriously but you can always just cut a bigger hole in the res top.

The 13 gallon model is the same footprint, just taller. The 13 gallon res is going to be more stable than the eight gallon res and it is nice to have a stable res. Add in the 5" net pot and that's a big upgrade from the XL8 for not much money but you can reuse the equipment and, more important, the expertise in growing hydro.

If I switch, it will be to the 13 gallon model.

*18"x11"x12" but reduce the height by 4" and that's 1584 cubic inches ≈ 6.87 gallons

I would just get a bucket like this, use a regular lid with a hole cut for your 3" net pot You should get 6+ gallons in the res. That is plenty for a single plant. If you use a 5" net pot you loose volume. Start you plants in the setup you have and transfer when the roots reach well into the res. You may be able to find them locally depending on where you live. Always get black.

Glad I found this thread. I wish I found it 2 months ago.
I'm half way through my first bubbleponic right now, a Pink Kush clone in a 5 gal bucket. I'll run clones next time too, so I can get myself and my system dialed in.

After that, back to autos :)

Question for @Mañ'O'Green

Could the smaller, faster, autos do OK in 3 gallon buckets, or better to stick with 5 gal? Something like Mephisto 24 Carat Kush? It would reduce the cost and workload quite a bit, and maybe even allow a small SOG.

Thanks!

The problems with a small reservoir are many. The root volume will leave very little water volume, small water volume is very hard to regulate PH and absolutely must have a float valve and top off tank. I have had plants drink a gallon a day. I don't recommend less than a 5 gallon bucket and 7 gallon is even better. If you want to do a SOG do this:

:thumbsup:Thanks for the advice. For now, I'll run my 5gal buckets, but rdwc looks inevitable, eventually. Lugging 18 kilogram buckets back and forth is already taking its toll.

@VitaMan Pumps and gravity do all of the heavy lifting in my system.

When I was using all three reservoirs as DWC the drain pump was moved from tank to tank I only use the center tank now. I don't carry water. My municipal water has improved so much that I am bypassing the RO and only using a carbon filter at this time. Incoming water is 70PPM.
