Completed F | T |F Growery: Seedsman Jack Herer

Lumii_20191217_192146184_compress28.jpg

So I received this strain as a freebie and I intended to clone a bunch off if it but it would get woody incredibly fast and take incredibly long to root; three to four weeks. I had three seeds and I thought about killing them in several occasions but I decided to go ahead and flower them since I didn't pay for them and maybe some of the other clones would root in the mean time.

Long story short I couldn't get good clones and decided to flower.

Welcome to the grow.

I've pretty much gotten away with not watering my entire tray for six days, a bit excessive as I saw some leaf drooping, but six days from a 3" flood makes me happy. I'm thinking the root system in the two smaller plants are less developed and suffered from under watering the fastest. Stretch is pretty moderate so far but nothing special so far. I'm not seeing anything special with these genetics so far, just big sensitive plants. Thankfully they were freebies as these aren't giving me much faith in Seedsman as a breeder.

Jack Herer is in the back left

pH: 5.5
Temperature: 82f
Humidity: 63.5%

So the Jack Herer were also fond of the 11/13 schedule and started throwing pistols. The two runty phenos are looking less than amazing while the large pheno is looking good but not great. I'm trying to withhold judgement on Seedsman but these genetics aren't doing it for me.

They are developing decently so I won't entirely complain just not impressed. The large pheno is very uniform and the best one so far with moderate stretching. Maybe they'll get a little thirstier with flowering really beginning.

I've had to tie these down as they were climbing up the side of the tent. The main pheno is alright but if I grow a Jack again it will be Sannie Seeds. They adapted and gave me a pretty even canopy. Pipe cleaners are amazing.

I've been foliar feeding for almost two weeks, three times a week, with better looking leaves that aren't cupping in the high heat with the lights 8-16" away. I neglected to add temperature differentials but for my notes I have been allowing it to drop to 74f at night with the temps higher during the day.

They aren't eating much considering my tap water is .3 EC and .3 of the 1.3 EC is CalMag. So 0.7 EC so far where Greenleaf Nutrients recommends 1.5 EC.

Nodes are moderate and sativa like in the biggest pheno the others appear to be stunted or deficient and less appealing lol.

Smaller pheno is finally starting to flower. Otherwise a semi compact structure in the buds. It might give a good yield.

I had to flood these yesterday, changing it from five to possibly four days in between, EC has been consistent and foliar feeding has been done.

No more training has been necessary and I ended up with mostly even canopy on all three phenos. I'm not expecting anything if quality from the two smaller phenos that have struggled their whole lives. The large pheno has minimal yellowing and strong stems with 8" average length colas.

I should have killed the two small ones because they are struggling and always have for the most part. Not much going but I'm getting a rotten fruit smell.

Leaves were lightening up but I'm seeing chlorosis like a deficiency which I'm thinking was either a calcium and or pH issue. I increased the strength of Mega Crop and the CalMag plus raised the ph.

I cut down the other two phenos that hadn't even begun swelling and so they are no more.

The plant smells like rotting fruit and looks to be possible give 4-6oz.

Plant looks a bit better since adjusting everything plus cutting those other plants out was nice. Some of the branches are getting a bit of a lean from weight, everything goes well I think 8oz is possible.

These guys either had weak stems from the deficicnecy I thought they had or they started putting on weight.

Put the net out to hold them up. They haven't been giving me issues. Fruity smell right now and pushing out the trichs.

It has been super cold in the attic and the LEDs don't help enough. Thankful the flower tent has a controller but the other tent not so much. On to the update.

Either stems are getting weak or bud is getting heavy but all the colas have decided to lean whichever way they please. The smell is less rotten and more sweet now with sticky but less oily feel.

Leaves stopped wilting and I believe I got ahead of whatever issue there originally. Pictures as usual but note that all these shots are from the branches hanging at the very bottom.

An edit to the EC because I was only measuring the MC and for the sake of accuracy I've noted the true EC. My tap measures at a .3 with the CalMag at a .9 and MC at 1.7.

Like a pregnant woman the time is drawing near and soon the calyxes will begin to swell. She is putting on some weight and the majority of branches have fallen over. The smell is like fruit with a subtle caramel or candied aroma. Trichome production isn't as bountiful as other strains noticeably.

This is a 50-70 day strain so in a few days I'll be checking trichomes for amber. The swell may be happening soon but I'm not seeing senescence in the sugar leaves yet.

Just about every cola has fallen over and the buds have gotten sticky with a rich sweet smell. Trichomes are turning amber on the sugar leaves but I'm going to leave them for another week or so.

I'm just letting these go while I wait for the trichomes to get more amber in them. Removed the net, just letting it all hang out. Instagram has been great for reposting videos and giving more accurate videos compared to just pictures.

Harvest - Day 53

This is the end and I am slightly regretful at not getting a mother. This was the fast pheno though. I'll be posting the dry weight and a smoke report later.

If I grow Jack again I'm going to run Sannie's Seeds version. My meters were messed up the whole grow for this and the Zamaldelica but the smoke was unimpressive from the Jack.

Haha, was going to suggest Sannies' Jack.
Had a pack of 10 regs, but due to my situation couldn't get them going.
Was in a new location, and weather was brutal.
But still have a pack of fem Killing Fields, that I'm waiting for the right time to drop.
Please tag me when you get the Sannies' Jack and fire them up!!
Maybe try his Shackzilla, Killing Fields, Sugar Punch, Silver Fields or some of those other hazes, if you like sativas.

Absolutely! I have a mother plant of Sannie's Extrema that I'm going to flower after my current run is over. Killing Fields has been in my cart for months but I'm hoping to expand my grow to a 4x12 so I can run 3 tables. Appreciate the suggestions and feel free to tag me in any grows you have going.

Great! I have a million beans in many carts, haha!
Not ordering anything these days, because got into some trouble with The Law after a package was intercepted.
(I live in a full on War on Drugs Hysteria country....)
Please tag me too for the Extrema.
Hope you can open her up and get a nice wide canopy on her.

I'll probably be running the Extrema/Zamaldelica and some other strains all at once but I will definitely tag you. Trying to get my cloning hammered out for true SOG grows plus I really REALLY hate the concept of defoliation so it fits my style.

The current grow has been minimal pruning and I think the plants look great lol. Training takes too much of my time. I really enjoy growing autos but I don't like constantly buying seeds when I've found great mothers from F1 seeds of photos.

Sucks about the prohibition. I feel I may as well be in the same boat.

Viz cloning, are you trying to get your moms ready so you can take large quantities of clones at a time for a true SOG?
I remember back in ... about 1996 or 1997, High Times mag had an article where the grower was doing 9 clones / sq ft, on little 4" rockwool cubes, straight into flower, and averaging, I think it was 7 g / plant, about 6" tall each, so about two oz / sq ft.
Haven't seen anything like that for a long time. Would be a lot of cloning work, but massive hauls!
I think there is also something wrong with the massive strip down defol that some growers do.
Good scientific discussion here.
Refers to a rare semi-formal experiment here.
Do you first buy fem seeds for your mothers, or regs?

My mothers are producing around 20 clones but 36 would be ideal. My actual cloning has been taking around 14-20 days but I would like to reach 7-10.

Learning about cloning and mothers has made me a better grower. I get a lot of intimate time experiencing all the phases of growth. Thanks for the links, I've read the CCFB one before and his information is great.

I just use fem seeds but I do plan to learn breeding at some point. Waiting to see the science or act of breeding other cannabinoids besides THC or CBD.

I'm also very interested in the other cannabinoid there's like 250+ of them it seems crazy to me that we only focus on 2 of them. But there is an increasing scientific interest in them as well as terps. Some studies even suggest lower thc strains can get you as high or higher that the strains with more thc, interesting stuff. The article I was reading about it was essentially saying that dispensaries mis-market their weed based on thc% because it's easier to overcharge based on the claim that they are more potent.

Absolutely. CBG/THCa are very interesting for cancer and are readily available at certain points in the cycle.

It's why I'm doing predominantly landrace cultivars. They have such wide cannabinoids profiles that have been untapped compared to Western strains and their destructive breeding habits. I firmly believe landraces need to be preserved lest native populations of cannabis be destroyed by genetic swamping.

I don't think all modern genetics are bad but I wonder what disservice have we done breeding for high THC when Mazar makes potent hash sub
10% THC. Slowly working towards craft cannabis with F1 landraces so that genetics can be preserved and robust terps/cannabinoid profiles can be enjoyed.

I too believe in preserving land races. I've personally never purchased seeds on-line but when I do bite that bullet I plan to specifically go for land races. I don't necessarily think breeding is bad, or even crossing for that matter. But when your strains have 6 or more strains crossed to make a new strain it's a bit ridiculous. And when it gets to that point, you really have no clue what you are actually getting because you could get a pheno leaning towards anything bread into it if not something entirely new. Breeding any strain should be done with a purpose in mind. There should be a specific goal. Be it pest or mold resistance or resin production what ever. But I feel like at this point breeders are only aiming for thc% and yields. Or they are breeding just to brand it as something "new" and proprietary. It's all about the money. Not the love of cannabis, or preservation.
