Anyone running a regular window ac to cool an area inside a larger room? Meaning a room within a room with ac cooling inner room and running off outer room air without direct outside access. Inner room is, by pure coincidence, approx 420 cu ft and approx 1/6 or smaller the size of the room it is in. I have been finding info that indicates this will not work effectively for a variet of reasons that make sense. Wondering if anyone has first hand experience. Unfortunately i found contra-indications after room was constructed-poor planning on my part. I could add extra ventillation to outer room to supplement airflow around ac unit. Sorry to ramble, feedback appreciated as always. Thanks.

The air conditioner needs to be where it can be vented outside or it will just blowhumid hot air where you don;t want it.

It CAN be done...not very practical for most applications IMO...

I personally have never done it...you COULD employ some sort of lung-room I'd say to cool/exchange hot air and then pull air in externally or from another section of room but sounds like a LOT of work...

I once built a 6x6 room inside of a 40x60 quansinhut you know half round metal shop, I put a AC in the little room, that was 3 years ago and the home owner's are still using the same AC 3 years later ....the shop it self is well vented , and it get's hot where im at you know 116 avg for 3 to 4 months with 120 peaks here and there.........with that said I think it can be done but size is every thing....

What you have to do is build a plenum box around the back of the ac and duct the hot air out with your exhaust you will also have to rig up a hose for the condensation :smokebuds:

i grow in my tent which is in my bedroom. and i have an AC window unit in my room, the basic ones with a knob you can turn from 1-10. ( not vented to the tent just blowing air in my room ) i live in texas so with it on my room and tent stay cool..id say cold actually. with it off my room gets pretty hot so it realllly helps me if thats what ur wondering :smokebuds:

Is it possible for you to put the unit in a window in the outer room and then build a duct between rooms so AC can blow into center room while exhausting outside?

been doing it for 5 - 6 years and i DONT vent anything outside , i do vent fresh air from the outside into my rooms but zero is vented out

after 5 - 6 years of doing this i can safely say it DOES work and not to listen to any "info that indicates this will not work effectively" i bring my temps from 100-115 deg lights on down to to 75-80 deg lights on , all depending on heat waves and hotter/cooler summer months

it works like a charm , the floor above it upstairs is warm though in the summer months and i run a hard plastic from the wall to the floor at an angle under it so the water drips arent hitting/pooling against the wall , it doesnt cause humidity as the humidity comming out of the back of it was already in the air

i do have a LOT of space in my large full basement so im sure that helps , but it still is in a room within a room then passively leaves the second room that does get hot

peace

p.s. you dont want ac units exhausting outside because they let out stink , even the water that drips from them will smell like your plants , and police dogs have smelt it and been cause for the warrant to kick in your door

Hey thanks everyone. Just for a clearer pic, my approx 8'x8'x8' insulated room is inside an uninsulated garage. ac would be sitting essentially in the center of the garage. As stated room is approx 1/6th the size of garage occupying middle 1/3 section of half of garage space. There is a window approx 8' away i was planning on installing a double fan in to increase circulation. If all else fails, as a last resort, I could move ac to window and run ducting into inner room. I dont know if this changes anything or not. Thanks again all.
bob- how big is your cooed area compared to the basement? What size ac unit?

my room is 12 ft X 16 ft

dunno the size of the entire basement , its big , i have 3 other rooms that are even bigger then that one with space between all/no shared walls

the other rooms all use portable ac units with the exhaust being sent up 2 floors to the attic , then passively dispersing from there

the wall ac unit is a bit small , id have to double check , it was at one time a 6.2 btu , but i think when replacing it a couple years ago i went with a 8000 , i mights kept with 6.2 though , sorry im not being exact , its been a couple/few years now , it isnt some big killer one though if that helps , and i dont use cool tubes either

peace
