Cannabis Sativa received its name in 1753,from Carolus Linnaeus (Swedish father of Botany). The word Sativa comes from the latin word for "cultivated".
Cannabis Indica received its name in 1783, from Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (French naturalist) who said the Cannabis Sativa plant found in Europe is different than the Cannabis plant in India and added the name Indica to distinguish between the two.
Cannabis Ruderalis received it's name in 1924, from Russian botanist, Janischewski, who studied wild cannabis in Russia/Asia. Ruderalis is the Russian word for "ruderal plant".
