 Some unsavory practices by both professional and aspiring breeders, companies large and small. Here will be discussed my experiences with unstable autoflower and photoperiod strains. This is informational and nothing more, as we are all on the same page here. I have had many plants display instability and see much more pervading commercial as well as amateur breeding and wish to log them for you to learn from.
Naturally I am no professional when it comes to cultivation only having 6 years actually in practice. This is why I look up to my elders here to set me along the right path. There are many out there like me who want to make their medicine and share it with this community. Now here is what I have been seeing lately and it is kind of a frightening thing and a reason I sought out the properly bred genetics.
I try and watch the newer generation of cultivators appearing on the scene as this Green Movement spreads across the country. Here is the issue. I have literally seen dozens of aspiring "breeders" purposely inject their crosses with femenized genetics. Far be it from me to stifle them lest I become a pariah, as will happen if I spoke my mind. The issue has been concerning me for a while. Companies that have become established have understood the need for purity in their strains, which is why we hold the value of genetics so dear. I had someone tell me I was taking all the fun out of weed because when they started smoking it was the disco era. I don't think seeking to understand the genetics of my medicine is taking out the fun, but rather enriching this Science and medicine beyond belief. They never believed that Cannabis could be over 30.0% thc, but some tried to understand the science.
Now breeders know that if they want to offer a line of femenized genetics, that it must remain separate from their regular genetics. Currently I have over five different strains in the vault that are the result of crossing lines. Now the people who these came from are aspiring breeders who have spread lots of these, but no one has bothered to question their origin. One person is using a fem. Pineapple Express from G13, and he is trying to tell me there will be no intersex tendencies or as too many people generally say "no hermies." My friends we must recognize that there have always been several types of intersex expression in cannabis plants and that to use such a general term expresses very little. I am sure he has ran it a few times, but like many of us he doesn't have the space, nor could he have run enough generations in the time the cross was made to make such an assertion. He is a friend however, and I just keep biting my tongue every time it is mentioned. He speaks of making further generations of this cross, but I cannot trust it. Somewhere in the code is the switch that can make my meds full of semillas.
It seems dozens of people I see are also spreading other crosses of G13 gear. I know it's dank, but then they are giving it to others, who are then making crosses with them. So it is reg pollen on fem plant, then reg pollen again, or selfed again then the selfed are hit with either reg or fem pollen again. I have no idea what some hippies get up to now. This is the basis for the beginning of too many to count. How they are choosing to start their genetic stock, and the kicker is that none of them have even researched any of the genetics behind their experiments. What kinds of scientists do not take notes? No mention of recessive traits, polyploidy, instability. Just slam together an f1 and bam hand it out.
Bloody shame. Now when the people are mentioned as the progenitors of this strain or that, or someone remarks on how great they are doing, I say nothing. I just don't cultivate anything associated with those lines. I know that there have been great genetic lines created by accident, the Bubba Kush has been speculated to be one. A more recent example is the GG#4, very high resin content, yet unsafe for my own ends. How safe are these crosses? At f1 stage, I am basically playing pollen roulette. The same people have absolutely zero control over cross contamination of any kind. Even a person on a meager budget can figure out a way to minimize the spread of random genetic material in their breeding areas, myself definitely included. I just have to stay away because the names they give could be completely different than the beans they are spreading. They are doing a great disservice to themselves and unintentional harm to the larger community. They have some regular crosses, and I trust they believe what they are telling me, but experience says if pollen from North Africa can reach Spain, then there is a huge possibility that pollen could travel in an open 10 ft area separated by sheets of poly. Without negative pressure and filters in every area. Organic pollination is as natural as it gets, but with multiple fathers and mothers sitting around in their prime there is just no way things have not gotten muddled.
Once again I have never said this stuff because they are a generous person who means well and just wants to grow some dank. I don’t want to cause any massive waves just to pursue the fruitless cause of getting them to rethink things. Let sleeping dogs lay. I want to do things correctly even if that takes a little bit longer to get it right. Cloning out mothers and sires would be ideal for me personally, but just may not be possible. I do not run any fem. genetics at the moment and haven’t for a couple seasons, but that will soon change with YDB auto. There are only two photos in veg, which are only there in their present form because I do not have an extra flowering light. Otherwise I would clone them down to a suitable height. Once again genetic testing has left my harvest times unpredictable, the last season ran a fortnight over and this one will as well. Sativa dominant experimental crosses from CannaVenture, and an avg daily heat in the high 80’s for a few weeks now have slowed things to a crawl. I cannot even start any new photos unless I wanted all males with temps swinging up to 90+. It is insanity.
This is why the Autoflower is so important, and its stability. I have been waiting for temps to drop, but let’s face it no spring this year, I will go ahead as scheduled with the new autos. I will start with two Yoda’s Dragon’s Breath, but seeing how tall they could be will opt for a smaller container. I don’t want to sell anything short, giggity, but I think a #2 should make a 1 ft auto at least. Always need something else to fall back on, other than the wait for photos to show me sex naturally over a month later. Another reason why becoming a Dragon Tamer is all the more important for me. Some day things will improve, I will acquire a Mars Hydro led , and start making my warm room work for me. Making the gradual transition from primarily photo to auto is daunting; and I welcome the assistance of any other Jedis and Dragon Tamers out there. More to come.

I agree - while variety is the spice of life, it's ruthless breeding that separates the men from the boys (Or Ladys from the girls).

It's become such a wide spread hobby, that almost anyone can reverse or chuck some pollen around and claim to have a "cross'
My breeding experience is Zero. But i'm interested in the complex hard work that goes into it behind the scenes.

Take a look a look at the Mephisto guys - they're solid breeders and really care about how things turn out.
Lots of work went on and is still going on with the Dragon Lines. Aunty Mossy has kindly shared her genetics with many people to either "play" with or try to move forward. (It's still a mystery how we actually get money to her! lol)

Nice post! Hope you find the info and friends/mentors you're hoping for!

All the best
Blue ^_^

Great post.I have had a bad experience with 2 out 5 grows that i have done, due to unstable genetics.I had a hermie issue with one strain.I had to pull 4 beautiful plants. The shame of it was,the smoke and the yield was great.I have limited space,to grow my meds. The other was supposed to be auto flowering,it vegged for 10 weeks. The issue i had with this one,was not enough room for my other flowering plants, lights ect.The plants had to be chopped,i could not change to 12/12 lights. This was my 1st. grow and i had no ideal what i was doing.Peace

:slap: for a thought provoking post... Being one of these hobby breeders you speak of I am guilty as charged when I first landed here... I was a pollen chucker to the extreme... I had zero clue, some what I thought at the time were being dicks to me called me out on what I was doing... It was due to their brutal honesty that help wake me up to what I was doing and how wrong it was....
I originally did think out my original crosses YDB being one of them and did research on the strain, well the best that I could have at the time... The reason for the Ydb cross was that the russian dragon is a very affy Dom pain relieving girl....that's why I chose a auto super skunk #1 thinking it would be a pretty solid true breeding strain (skunk #1)...I than decided to learn how to reverse plants and this is where I am on the fence with fem genetics...if a plant is reversed properly I don't see it causing hermie proned off spring any less so than using a male and a female... what I am afraid of with using just strictly fem genetics is bottlenecking the strain and like you said cutting out half its male genetics diversity... I believe that us hobby breeders with love, passion, and lots of time and hardwork can make something special... I do not like that from f2 and f3 fems were used on the ydb... My plan is to cross it back to either one of the f1 males or to introduce Mr. Nice Shit genetics into the mix than cross back to an f3 to get it back auto... Well, I guess my point is that a breeding project is a labor of love and in my eyes a never ending process... Until you either get sick of growing that strain or you think that what you finally produced is perfect (but nothing is ever perfect hence I see it being a never ending project) My other project that I think has merit to continue foward is my lowryder x purple chem cross which I am also going to cross it back to one of its photo parents to reintroduce the male gene and to try an keep the auto trait but little else...
I think in multipots and small containers ONE strain at time for a hobby breeder is doable.... I learned that taking on to much is where things get mucked up... I mean I know personally I never plan on making a living of this and do it strictly out of the love for the medicine that has sustained me being an active productive member of society, without I am afraid the MS would have gotten the best of me...
I wish you luck with the YDB, please do understand while growing her out its a work in progress I want peoples true opinions on the grow and the strain, not looking for an ego stroke but rather honest feedback to help further this lady along... Ive some of the best breeders out there bodhi, gage green, loompa, mr nice, the list continues they have all been known to have strains along the way that will throw nanners... Speaking of I find it very interesting some of the most popular clone only strains orginated from a plant that hermied? GSC being an example.... Most anything crossed with her will have the tendency to throw sacs....I guess that is part of the reason stress testing and trying to grow out the strain with tons of abuse to see its tendency to go intersex on you, and stay far away from the stock that can be easily stressed into going hermie and use only stock that has proven it self...
To cut a long medicated ramble response I guess Im just saying good luck with the grow!, tell your friend how you feel, don't worry about feelings in the long run you will be doing them a favor, I know I think that much more highly of the people that took the time to school me in what I was doing.... It hurt at the time but in the long run was the best things... Possibly send your friend a couple of links to some good books on breeding that will help them out, pm for the links if interested.. When running any plant thats from seed it always warrants a close eye for it going hermie... As even the most stable lines with the right stressors will go hermie...
:Sharing One:

The thai plant is a good example of this kind of tendency. It has been used to create some of the finest smoke there is, but if there is a large portion of thai in a strain, it has a potential to revert back to its natural tendency. The Dragon's Breath will be a great experience, no doubt and you will receive full documentation. I am not sure of the protocol for updating a journal. I figure I will start a separate one for them, and update several times a month. Macro pics are a must, but I will have to start recording my temps and RH more thoroughly. I am not sure if its been done here, but they will be receiving the Botanicare Kind series. I thank you for the well wishes Yodabuds. Good luck as well with the Mr. Nice infusion, the strain Shit was one I tried to order, the last time I went through Attitude about 3 years ago. X-mas, excited, didn't think I needed a guarantee because I had never had problems with them before. Never received anything, in a way a good thing, in a way bad. Not getting the h.s. seal of approval and case # was fine for me. I just never saw one bean from that, and couldn't say a word. C'est la vie. Paranoia will destroy ya. I don't know if folks feel cool with talking about that subject, ye olde green tape, eagle letter, and such. Maybe I need to look around and see if that thread is already around somewhere.

The Candy Kush Auto is a strain I have seen a good amount of logs created here and I am relieved to hear that for many this strain performed as it should, but I have to say that it was one I regret purchasing. Note, when I ordered them, back before my last couple of work accidents, they had just been released. Yep its been that long. I think I should begin a journal for that one, but here will discuss the instability topic. Auto seeds made it sound so damn good, who could resist the chance to get anywhere up to an elbow of flowers. They hooked me my friends. I knew I couldn't achieve the mark, but I was will to believe in getting at least a couple zip.
I know the description mentioned a 2-3 foot plant, that would bush out and get really dense. Oh yeah. I was trying to adhere to the schedule that many autos follow and give her 10+weeks. I didn't start adding flowering nutrients until the usual time. Now I know that the induction of hormone changes can be caused by adding one's flowering nutrients at the correct time, but I wasn't sure of this back then. I wanted it to reach potential. When it reached the 2 ft mark it just kept growing, through 3 and 4 as well. 30+ days and no pistils anywhere. Eventually near week 6 a few wispy hairs showed up. Literally I had grown a bean pole with a 150 watt hps, that shockingly yielded- 18 grams. Even with bloom nutrients it never flowered very strongly at all. I have seen fluorescent lighting make bulky auto ladies. I didn't understand what I did wrong with a 150 hps, and felt embarrassed and fleeced.
It was genetic instability on the part of Auto seeds, which they have probably corrected through successive generations now, but they released it without making sure it remained a 2ft frost giant not a 5 foot stalk of corn with barely enough yield to last two weeks. It performed extremely well in veg, and I had high hopes. That was my first experience with an unstable automatic strain. More to come

I think one problem is that people do not realize how easy it is to transfer pollen on your clothes, hair, etc.
If you are breeding with males in one place and females in another, you really have to use clean techniques (changing clothes or taking off coveralls, blowing your hair with air, washing hands) when going from one place to another.
All it takes is a person unwittingly taking a few grains of unwanted pollen clinging to their hair or clothes into a room with female plants and you may end up with unwanted seeds mixed in with your desired seeds.
Also your ventilation system needs filters on the intake side.
