Hey guys! I'm fairly new to the AFN. I have come to enjoy the forums. There is a lot of great articles and discussions. Very impressed. I come from a horticulture back ground. I love growing just about anything. I started out growing palm trees. You know your a patient person when you wait 6 months for a sprout.
How do you check your trichromes ? I use a loop. Also, I use a digital microscope that goes up to 220X way more then I need but hey; when you want to look real close at the trichromes its handy to have. Its nice to get a real close up look and pay attention at the trichromes when its time to harvest. Espessially when going photoperiod. Autoflowers not so much for they are great at letting you know when they are finished. The yellowing of the big fan leaves etc. I personally still like to know where my clear/cloudy ratio and get a closer look at the buds. I will look at maybe one or two bud sites with the digital microscope and look at the rest of the plant with the loop.
I am a little bit pickier when it comes to harvest time. I like my bud a certain way. I don't like the "couch lock" so if I start to see 5% amber trichomes on the plant I usually start the " cleansing " process. That also depends on the strain too. I like the nice uplifting body high that helps me focus and relieve my nausia from my over active gallbladder;so I have to pay attention to my trichromes. So far I have not run into an auto flower that produces a lot of amber trichromes so the road to harvest time is sweet. Nice and easy. Little inspection needed.

I use a loupe. And occasionally a macro from the phone. Nice job.

I take close up pictures with my camera, but that's just because close up pictures of weed look nice. I don't check for trichomes, never worked for me.

Picture of a ripe-ish bud.

[edit] I've tried letting weed go "too long" and there was no couch lock. Amber trichomes don't automatically mean it'll be "zombie weed", if there isn't enough amber, the high will be unpleasant, fidgety and full of anxiety and even paranoia.
